G R O U P E X E R C I S EAvoid Frustrating Fitness Plateaus!Cardiovascular Training ~ Strength Training ~ Flexibility TrainingDo you have all three in your routine?Fall is a time when people start heading indoors toexercise. It is also a perfect time to reevaluate yourprogram and perhaps make some changes. In order tocontinuously see results and respond to your workoutsyou need to rearrange your program and change thestimulus. Our bodies adapt to imposed demands. It iscrucial to consistently change your routine in order toconsistently change your body.In order to see results and achieve balance you need toincorporate the three elements of exercise into your fitnessroutine: cardiovascular training, strength training, andflexibility training. If you are looking for a bit of guidance, some motivation and camaraderie, let the Group Exercisestaff help you with your fitness program. Currently thereare 70+ classes at West and nearly 40+ classes at North.(The amount of classes offered at each facility is directlyproportional to the membership numbers.)For more information, check out the publishedgroup exercise schedule available in the flyerracks, on our website www.akrongeneral.orgor by calling North: 330-945-3130 orWest: 330-665-8130.Yourhealth & wellnessLet the Group Exercise staff help. All of our Group Exercise Instructors arenationally certified. Each instructor has his/her own uniquemethods and personality. Therefore, no two classes shouldever be the same. By varying your workouts, you will helpprevent muscle memory and its consequential lack ofresponse to your current routine. This will help preventyou from those frustrating fitness plateaus. Welcomechange by trying a new class, mixing up your routine andadding in those missing elements! Here are a Few Group Exercise Reminders:1. H E A LT H T I P S F O R Y O UFighting the Flu—Tis’ the SeasonWhen it’s flu season, it can mean serious business -especially if you’re at high risk. The flu can be severe forcertain populations primarily because of the complications. Some 36,000 Americans die of the flu and its complicationseach year, while 200,000 are hospitalized. The very young, the very old and the chronically ill are themost vulnerable. For these populations, the flu may proveto be life-threatening if pneumonia develops. For a middleagedindividual, who typically has a stronger immunesystem, the likelihood of severe complications from the fluis much, much less than those in the at-risk populations.Viral infections such as the flu are primarily transmitted bydroplet infection, which means the virus actually is spreadby the sneezing, the coughing and the respiratorysecretions from one person to another. People maysometimes wipe their faces, blow their noses, or cough intotheir hands and then shake hands with someone else.Your Best DefenseFlu vaccine—get your vaccine as early as possible(September through November is best) but well throughJanuary, possibly even into February if there is flucirculating.Use “Cough etiquette”—Coughing into the sleeve of yourarm is considered much safer than coughing into yourhands. You can spread the flu by touching common objects.Hand washing—Wet hands with warm water, apply thesoap and scrub vigorously for 30 seconds.Immediately dispose of used tissues—Reduce the risk ofspreading the virus to someone else.Carry pocket-size alcohol-based sanitizers—Great forthose times when soap and water is not immediatelyavailable; may also help to moisturize the skin and reducedryness.Stay home if you’re sick—Spreading the illness toco-workers will create a further loss of work force downthe line.As part of an ongoing system-wide commitment to preventionand wellness, Akron General Health & Wellness Centers willcontinue to offer its’ flu vaccinations through the month ofOctober. Check at the front desk for a complete schedule or logon to www.akrongeneral.org for more information.Want more flu information?Check out these articles.Check Flu Activity Across the United Stateshttp://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/fluactivity.htmQ & A about the Flu Vaccinehttp://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/fluvaccine.htmIf the Shoe Fits...If you participate in a sport three times a week, you need sport-specificshoes. To get the proper fit, try on athletic shoes after a workout or latein the day, when your feet are largest. Put on the socks you'll wear withthose shoes. You should be able to wiggle all your toes, and your heelsshouldn't slip.Yourhealth & wellness
