Ross will conclude his second <strong>and</strong> final three year term asBorough mayor in October 2006. He plans on retiring from the State <strong>and</strong>focusing his attention on his Native art.Gregg D. Renkes served as <strong>Alaska</strong>’s fifteenth Attorney General <strong>and</strong> in thatposition also served as co-chair <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Alaska</strong> Rural Justice <strong>Law</strong>Enforcement Commission. During his tenure as Attorney General, Renkesmade protecting <strong>Alaska</strong>’s children, communities, consumers, naturalresources, financial assets, <strong>and</strong> sovereignty his top priorities. GeneralRenkes was a voice for increasing local control over basic public safetyissues in village <strong>Alaska</strong> <strong>and</strong> advocated the holding <strong>of</strong> important trials, evenat greater expense, in small communities to reinforce communityinvolvement in safety <strong>and</strong> justice. General Renkes focused on theproblems <strong>of</strong> child abuse <strong>and</strong> the related problems <strong>of</strong> substance abuse, <strong>and</strong>helped initiate a statewide criminal task force to interdict drugs <strong>and</strong> stopbootlegging <strong>of</strong> alcohol to dry villages. Prior to taking <strong>of</strong>fice as <strong>Alaska</strong>Attorney General, General Renkes worked on energy, natural resource, <strong>and</strong>American Indian law <strong>and</strong> policy in both the public <strong>and</strong> private sectors. Hefrequently spoke on these topics <strong>and</strong> at one time regularly contributedarticles to the Tundra Times concerning legal issues that affect <strong>Alaska</strong>Native people. General Renkes also served as the Majority Staff Director<strong>of</strong> the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy <strong>and</strong> Natural Resources <strong>and</strong>worked as Chief <strong>of</strong> Staff <strong>and</strong> Chief Counsel to U.S. Senator FrankMurkowski.
