GlossaryADAPTIVE ESP ®Electronic Stability ProgramADAPTIVE ESP ® is a dynamic h<strong>and</strong>lingcontrol system which operates based on thevehicle’s load status. If thedriver exceeds these limits, evenADAPTIVE ESP ® will not be able toprevent an accident!Anti-lock braking system (ABS)The anti-lock braking system (ABS) preventsthe wheels from locking during braking.Speed sensors continuously monitor thespeed of each wheel. The brake pressureis reduced before there is a risk of a wheellocking up. When the danger of lockinghas been averted, the pressure is increasedagain. ABS helps the driver to maintaincontrol of the vehicle’s steering, even duringemergency braking. When ABS is inoperation, the driver feels a slight pulsingin the brake pedal.Acceleration skid control (ASR)At the first signs of wheel spin, that isto say if the rotational speed of one of thedrive wheels suddenly increases, ASRintervenes in the brake system <strong>and</strong> reducesthe engine power to prevent extendedwheel spin. ASR ensures smooth start-off<strong>and</strong> acceleration, without extended wheelspin or sideways drift. The result is improvedtraction – <strong>and</strong> safety – particularlyon split-friction or slippery surfaces.Brake Assist (BAS)In tests carried out in the driving simulator,our research engineers established thatdrivers do not apply the brakes vigorouslyenough during emergency braking. Thisfinding led them to develop Brake Assist.From the speed at which the brake pedalis depressed, Brake Assist is able to detecta situation where emergency brakingis required. In such a situation the systemautomatically increases braking power,aided by the anti-lock braking system (ABS)which prevents the wheels from locking up.Electronic brake force distribution (EBV)Electronic brake force distribution (EBV)proportions the braking force between thefront <strong>and</strong> rear wheels as required, inorder to optimise braking efficiency in alldriving situations. In this way the systemprevents “overbraking” of the rear wheels,which could cause the tail to start sliding.At the same time EBV puts less stress onthe front brakes, which reduces the riskof fading due to overheating.Adaptive brake lightsThe adaptive brake lights enhance activesafety as they give a clearer signal whenthe vehicle is braked in an emergency. Thisis achieved thanks to the fact that all threebrake lights start to flash in the event ofemergency braking, thus warning the trafficbehind <strong>and</strong> shortening the reaction timesof the drivers behind. If the vehicle is brakedto a st<strong>and</strong>still, the hazard warning lights areactivated automatically.36Glossary


Start-off assistIn vehicles with manual transmission, startoffassist enhances comfort when movingoff, especially on uphill or downhill slopes,making the driver’s job much easier. Oncethe brake pedal has been released, thebrake pressure is maintained for approximatelytwo seconds, thus allowing thedriver to move his or her foot to the acceleratorpedal without the vehicle rollingbackwards or forwards. The brake pressureis immediately reduced as soon as startoffassist detects that the driver wishes tomove off.Driver <strong>and</strong> co-driver front airbagsAdditional passive safety componentsinclude a driver’s front airbag <strong>and</strong> aco-driver’s front airbag or twin co-driver’sairbag. They increase the level of protectionafforded to front occupants wearingseat belts <strong>and</strong> therefore provide an extrarestraint system in addition to the seat beltin the event of severe frontal collisions.Note: front airbags in no way diminishthe need for occupants to fasten theirseat belts correctly before every journeyas an airbag can only operate fully effec -tively if the occupant is wearing the seatbelt correctly.Windowbags <strong>and</strong> thorax bagsThe Vito can be equipped with windowbags<strong>and</strong> thorax bags to complement thefront airbags. In a severe side impact,these airbags are deployed on the impactside. The windowbags are designed tomaximise head protection for the driver<strong>and</strong> co-driver. They deploy in the areaof the side windows. Housed in the outsidebolsters of the seat backrests, thorax bagsare designed to provide increased protectionfor the upper torso of the driver<strong>and</strong> co-driver when deployed.ESP ® trailer stabilisationThis system complements ADAPTIVE ESP ®<strong>and</strong> improves driving safety when towinga trailer by precisely braking the frontwheels of the towing vehicle <strong>and</strong> reducingthe engine torque if the trailer starts swinging,therefore helping the driver to stabilisethe vehicle-trailer combination. In theevent of several activations in succession,the applied braking power is increasedcontinually, resulting in a substantial reductionin the vehicle speed.Load restraintA number of dynamic forces are genera -ted when a vehicle <strong>and</strong> load are in transit.These can lead to uncontrolled shifting,slipping, tipping or rolling of unsecuredcargo – with the result that the risk of anaccident is increased. With their st<strong>and</strong>ardload restraint features as well as numer -ous optional systems <strong>and</strong> a comprehensiverange of accessories, Mercedes-Benz <strong>van</strong>shelp operators to secure loads expertly <strong>and</strong>professionally. Features offered by the Vitoinclude st<strong>and</strong>ard-fit load-securing points.Cargo-retention grilles, various partitions<strong>and</strong> a rail system are available as specialequipment.▸ Top left <strong>and</strong> centre figures: load restraint is primarilyachieved by placing loads against the front or rearbulkheads <strong>and</strong> the sides of the vehicles, <strong>and</strong> thenfilling any gaps. Take-back of end-of-life vehicles. Coming full circle. At the end of its long life, you can return your Vito to us for environment-friendly disposal in accordancewith the EU End-Of-Life Vehicle Directive. But that day lies a long way off. The take-back of end-of life vehicles applies in accordance with nationalregulations to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight. The Vito has met the requirements governing the suitability of a vehicle’s design for reuse <strong>and</strong> recyclingfor a number of years now. A network of vehicle take-back depots <strong>and</strong> dismantlers has been established which will process your vehicle in an environmentfriendlymanner. The ways in which both vehicles <strong>and</strong> parts can be recovered are subject to ongoing development <strong>and</strong> improvement. Consequently,the Vito will be able to comply with any future increases in the recycling quota within the stipulated time limits.
