CAMPAIGN UW: CREATING FUTURES 2000~2008Impressive ResultsTHE POWEROF NUMBERSDuring the Beijing Olympics we learned the Chinese regardthe number eight as auspicious, signifying prosperity.Perhaps that holds for the UW community too, as weconclude eight years of Campaign UW in 2008. Engineersknow that numbers have power, at least in mathematicalif not cultural expression, and our numbers are huge! Thanks to more than 10,000 alumni, friends, andcorporate partners, we surpassed our goal and raised over$267 million. We are deeply grateful for the generosityof so many whose gifts ranged from $1 to $16 million. No matter the size, each means someone cares about ourstudents and educational mission.Extraordinary giving is both essential and transformative.Private support is now the third largest source offunding for engineering education and research. Withstate dollars primarily earmarked for faculty salaries, thecollege must rely on private giving to create scholarshipsand fellowships that provide access for students, establishprofessorships to recruit and retain outstanding teachingand research faculty, and provide unrestricted support forstudent programs and projects.Central to our success was an active and engagedcampaign committee under the leadership of recentlyretired Weyerhaeuser CEO Steve Rogel. These volunteersadvised on college priorities, assisted with outreach toalumni and friends locally and across the U.S., and gavegenerously of their time and resources. “Thank you” canonly begin to express our appreciation. Our Campaign UW numbers are already generatingimpact. Over $27 million in new scholarship and fellowshipendowments has begun opening Engineering’s doorsto many more promising students. This fall we hired 16exceptional new faculty members — some hires madepossible by the $16 million in new professorships and chairsthat make us competitive with our peers. To all 10,000 campaign participants who demonstratedthe power of numbers: Thank you! Your gifts will transformthe future — and it’s an exciting one.Matthew O’Do n n e l lFrank and Julie Jungers Dean of EngineeringParticipants ~New donors (first-time gifts to Engineering)• 4,457 individuals• 968 organizations6,055 donors made multiple giftsMatching Initiatives ~UW Matching Gifts Initiative• 29 new endowments• $20.6 million gift and match totalStudents First Initiative• 45 new scholarships and fellowships• $20.7 million gift and match totalFaculty, Staff, Retiree Campaign• 54 faculty, staff, and retiree donors made giftsof $5000 or more through June 30.(FSR campaign extends through December 31)Percent20151050Alumni Participation by DepartmentPercentage of alumni donorsin each department makinggifts to Campaign UW(to Engineering and other units)BIOE EE ME MSE CEE IE AA CSE TC CHEMEDepartment12 TREND • Vol 58:2 • Autumn 2008
