75<strong>Soil</strong> Map Unit 3The imperfectly to "moderately" poorly drained soils <strong>of</strong> MapUnit 3 occur in poorly defined snowmelt run<strong>of</strong>f channels (Plate 3) anddepressional areas <strong>of</strong> late snow cover and seasonal ponding .These soilshave deep (20 to 40 cm), dark colored organic (Oh) horizons that lookvery much like Ah horizons ; however, <strong>the</strong>y contain 30 to 65 percentorganic matter .Classification :These soils are classified as Orthic and Cumulic Regosols asa result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Oh, C or Ohl, Oh2, Oh3,C horizon sequences with brightlycolored C horizons (no indication <strong>of</strong> gleying processes) .Associated Map Units :These soils occur in close association with <strong>the</strong> peaty RegoGleysols <strong>of</strong> Map Unit 5 in some groundwater discharge areas . Map Unit 4soils have similar horizonation to Map Unit 3 soils ; however, <strong>the</strong> latterare poorly and very poorly drained Gleysols .Vegetation :Vegetation is made up <strong>of</strong> communities with Luetkea pectinatadominant in <strong>the</strong> snowmelt drains and Carex nigricans dominant in <strong>the</strong> basinareas . Occurring with <strong>the</strong> Luetkea pectinata are such species as Phyllodoceempetriformis , Erigeron peregrinus and <strong>the</strong> occasional Abies lasiocarpa .Pedon Description A :(<strong>Soil</strong> pedons representative <strong>of</strong> this map unit were sampled in two locations .)Described by : L .
