APPENDIX ASOIL MAP UNIT DESCRIPTIONS AND ANALYTICAL DATASoil Map Unit 1These medium to moderately coarse textured soils arefound mainlyon the Summit ridge in the north half of the study area .The soil profileis often developed in fairly thin, discontinuous deposits of aeolianmaterials which overlie previously developed profiles .Slopes arecommonly less than 15 percent with variations of up to 60 percent, andaspect is variable .Classification :These soils are classified as Orthic Humo-Ferric Podzol sincethere is sufficient amorphous aluminum and iron (pyrophosphate extraction)in both the upper and paleo B horizons to qualify as Bf horizons .Theupper Bf has greater than 5 percent organic carbon content, and thereforeit is actually a Bhf ;however, it does not satisfy minimum depth requirementsfor a Ferro-Humic Podzol .Typical podzolic morphology is absentor very weak in these soils . Colors of the B horizons are 7 .5 YR hues ;and amorphous structure, pellets and "slippery" feel are not obvious .Associated MaQUnits :Map Unit 2 soils are often closely related geographically andmorphologically to those of Map Unit 1 . The Map Unit 2 soils have adeeper Ah ( >10 cm)and do not usually have B horizons that qualifychemically as Bf's, although some do .Even though the Ah horizons are50 cm thick, and the B horizons are 10 YR hue, these soils may still bePodzols .Map Unit 8 soils are Podzolic soils with Ah horizons of
