37INTERPRETATIONS<strong>Soil</strong> Properties and Land Use<strong>Soil</strong>s are perhaps <strong>the</strong> most basic resource to consider when planningland use activities .Proper use and management <strong>of</strong> soil resources isrequired to accommodate user activities and facilities at minimal cost, bothin terms <strong>of</strong> construction and maintenance and in terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong>impairment to <strong>the</strong> environment .<strong>Soil</strong>s vary in <strong>the</strong>ir type and severity <strong>of</strong>limitations as sites for developments such as trails,camping areas,buildings, or septic tank filter fields . Some soils have severe limitationsfor one or more uses, while o<strong>the</strong>r soils may be well suited for anumber <strong>of</strong> uses . Knowledge <strong>of</strong> soil characteristics is basic to goodplanning and management .This section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> report provides predictions <strong>of</strong> soil performancebased on field observations and laboratory data as well as pastexperience and published information .These predictions are intended toserve as input into <strong>the</strong> planning process, not as recommendations for landuse, <strong>the</strong>reby providing tools for <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> planners .It must be realized that <strong>the</strong> interpretations are based on <strong>the</strong>characteristics <strong>of</strong> natural soils to a depth <strong>of</strong> 1 or 2 meters (3 to 6 feet)(although characteristics at greater depths can <strong>of</strong>ten be extrapolatedfrom available information) .Due to <strong>the</strong> variable nature <strong>of</strong> soils, smallinclusions <strong>of</strong> unmappable (due to scale) soil types may be present in anarea where a development is planned .Therefore, on site investigation bya person familiar with soils isrecommended prior to construction <strong>of</strong>facilities .The following are some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> basic soil properties that singly
