occurs under <strong>the</strong> Bf .This horizon is very difficult to penetrate andacts as a barrier to water movement and plant root development .Below<strong>the</strong> Bfc is <strong>the</strong> yellowish brown sandy loam textured till <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> C horizon .The following is a brief description <strong>of</strong> an Ortstein Ferro-HumicPodzol typical <strong>of</strong> map unit 9 soils .Horizon Depth (cm) Color Texture % C .F . % O .M .Ahe 0 - 5 dark brown SiL 5 10 .8Bhf 5 - 11 dark reddish brown SiL 10 18 .0Bfc 11 - 24 dark reddish brown LS 15 2 " 9C 24+ yellowish brown SL 15 -The Podzolic soils <strong>of</strong> map unit 9are distinguished from those <strong>of</strong>map unit 8 by <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> an Ah horizon, or only a very thin Ah in <strong>the</strong>former, and from <strong>the</strong> soils <strong>of</strong> map unit 1 by <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> an Ah and <strong>the</strong>presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ortstein horizon in <strong>the</strong> map unit 9 soils .The landscape on which <strong>the</strong>se soils occurs ranges from class Etoclass G with <strong>the</strong> more steeply sloping class G (30 to 60 percent slopes)being <strong>of</strong> greater areal extent .The slopes are <strong>of</strong>ten limiting for variousrecreational uses . Erosion hazard <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> disturbed soils is high . The Aeand upper Bf horizons are very loosely structured and friable and <strong>the</strong>ortstein layer restricts downward water movement .<strong>Soil</strong> Map Unit 10(Lithic Humo-Ferric Podzol)The Podzolic soils <strong>of</strong> this map unit have a bedrock (lithic)contact within 50 cm <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> surface . These soils are associated with <strong>the</strong>Podzolic soils <strong>of</strong> map units 9 and 8 and represent a lithic phase <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>sesoils where bedrock and shallow deposits <strong>of</strong> till occur (Plate 6-a) .The
