13FIGURE 2 .DIAGRAM OF A SOIL PROFILEE0L-F--Organic layer which may be subdividedL, F, H or Of, Om, and Ohinto--A mineral horizon at or near the surface . Itmay be a dark colored horizon in which thereis an accumulafion of humus(Ah), or a lightcolored horizon from which clay, iron, andhumus have been leached(Ae) .B--Mineral horizon that (1) may have an enrichmentof iron(Bf), or organic matter(Bh) ; or (2)may be altered to give a change in color orstructure (Bm) .--Mineral horizon comparatively unaffected by thesoil forming process operative in the A and Bhorizons except for the process of gleying (Cg) .The B horizon is the zone of accumulation of materials carrieddown from the A or is markedly altered by chemical and physical processesto give a change in color or structure .Bf horizons have accumulations ofsignificant amounts of iron and aluminum . Bm horizons have lesser amounts .The C is underlying material which is comparatively unaffected by thepedogenic (soil forming) processes .Through observation of soil characteristics it ispossible toclassify soils into taxanomic units .In this report the System of SoilClassification for Canada (Canada Soil Survey Committee, 1973)is used(see Table 3, Key to the Soils) . The criteria used for making the taxonomicseparations are significant for understanding soil genesis and for landuse applications .
