<strong>Mount</strong> Copeland (6,060 feet ASL) .At <strong>Revelstoke</strong> mean annual precipitationis 42 .0 inches with about 17 inches occurring as snow and at <strong>Mount</strong> Copeland<strong>the</strong>re isa total precipitation <strong>of</strong> 95 .2 inches with about 83 .4 inches assnow .VegetationThe <strong>Summit</strong> area represents <strong>the</strong> upper limit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> continuousforest zone in this area . This timberline zone (Daubenmire, 1943) orforest-tundra ecotone (Weaver and Clements, 1938 ; Marr, 1961) is characterizedby clumps and individuals <strong>of</strong> coniferous trees, Abies lasiocarpa withoccasional Picea engelmannii and meadows <strong>of</strong> mixed herbaceous vegetation(dominant species include Luetkea p_ectinata , Carex spp ., Valerianasitchensis , Arnica latifolia , Erigeron peregrinus , Antennaria lanata , andpatches <strong>of</strong> Cassiope mertensiana ) .The forested areas are dominated byAbies lasiocarpa ,with Rhododendron albiflorum and Vaccinium membranaceumunderstory vegetation .Complete descriptions and a map <strong>of</strong> plant communities are includedin <strong>the</strong> report by Landals and Scotter (in prep .) .Plant nomenclature isaccording to Hitchcock and Cronquist (1973) .A table <strong>of</strong> scientific andcommon plant names is included in <strong>the</strong> Appendix .History and Development<strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Revelstoke</strong> Park was established in 1914 and in 1927 <strong>the</strong>first road was built to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Summit</strong> .A commercial tourist lodge wasoperated on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Summit</strong> from 1940 to 1963 . In 1967 <strong>the</strong> road was rebuiltto its present gravel surfaced standards .<strong>the</strong> area is presently a day-use area only .The lodge has been removed andA system <strong>of</strong> hiking trails
