4. Auditioning ensembles will be identified to the auditor by ONLY: school code number,entry letter, names of singers and voice parts. Be certain your studentsknow their ensemble letter!5. Audition sites will post a list of accepted students and a list of singers to be recalledat the conclusion of the initial auditions.6. Materials to be used for auditions will be posted at each audition site at 7:30 A.M. onOctober 23.7. Vocal directors may not enter the audition room.8. All vocal auditions are a cappella.9. For first round auditions, singers may get their starting pitches from:a.) A singer in the ensemble using a pitchpipe to play pitches;b.) A singer in the ensemble playing pitches on a keyboard;c.) A high school student, who is not a member of the auditioning ensemble, playingthe pitches on a keyboard.10. Each entry will be instructed to sing portions of the chosen All-State selections. Amaximum of 7 minutes will be allotted for each audition. Students will be judged onthe following factors: Intonation, rhythm, tone quality, and musicianship with strongconsideration of dynamics and articulation.11. All selections must be performed in the designated key.12. For recalls, singers appear alone and sing their voice part unaccompanied. Pitchesfor recall will be given by a person designated by the audition manager. <strong>The</strong> pitchgiverwill provide the starting pitch, the chord at the entrance, and then repeat thestarting pitch.13. In the interest of balancing sections, accepted vocalists will be posted as either I orII. Should this be a change, the accepted vocalist is expected to learn the new partby the dates of the festival.14. Vocal entries must appear as registered. Illness or emergency circumstances mayreduce an entry below the original registration, however a school may increase thenumber of participants only by following the provisions specified in Errors In Registration(P.11).15. Director’s sets/Accompanists sets of the All-State music are a responsibility of thedistrict and must be paid for by the director/district apart from their All-State registration.16. Auditioning groups may be asked to audition on the Jordan/Ballenger arr. of “Americathe Beautiful” and the Wilhousky arr. of “<strong>The</strong> Battle Hymn”. Copies of these selectionsmay be purchased by contacting Jay’s <strong>Music</strong> (800-798-5555).17. Soloist information: Singers selected for All-State are invited to send a tape to SusanBeasley, Cedar <strong>Fall</strong>s <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>, 1015 Division Street, Cedar <strong>Fall</strong>s, IA 50613.Sopranos may audition for “Welcome All Wonders” and “Here’s A Pretty Little Baby”.Tenors may audition for “Here’s A Pretty Little Baby”. Please send a separate tapefor each number and each voice category. Singers say only their name, not theschool’s name, before they sing. If multiple singers are on one tape, please numbereach singer and have each say their number plus their name. On the outside of thetape, write the name of the song and the school’s name. From “Welcome All Wonders”,record a cappella the entire solo on p. 11. From “Here’s A Pretty Little Baby”,record a cappella from M. 24 through M. 31, verse 1; rest for 4 beats; return to M.24 and sing verse 2 through M. 31. Postmark deadline for the tapes is October 27,<strong>1999</strong>.
