What is DuraPlate ® ?DuraPlate is a proven structural composite material that consists of two external skinsthermally bonded to a high-density polyethylene core. It was originally developed in 1996 forover-the-road trailers. The DuraPlate composite trailer is the leader in the North American truckingindustry, with over 350,000 on the road today. At the heart of the DuraPlate panel is a structure thatis extremely strong and energy absorbent, resulting in durability, impact resistance and unsurpassedaesthetic appeal. The technology behind DuraPlate includes key integral components thatall come together in a highly specialized process to form a panelwhose combined properties are more rigid than other typesof materials. Utilizing DuraPlate’s galvanized-steelskins, polyethylene core and bonding agentsresult in a panel that offers superior strengthand high wall stiffness.STEELOUTER SKINFOAMED-PLASTICCORE MATERIALwPolyester baked-on finishRust-inhibiting baked-on primer80,000 psi yield full-hard steelZinc coating: G-90 hot-dipgalvanizedSpecial Proprietary PrimerFoamed-Plastic CoreSTEELINNER SKINWood Doors• CRACKING– Plywood doors are prone to crackingwhen impacted– Coatings and laminated skins cannoteliminate a crack or inner-core shear– Can lead to door binding up and/orwater intrusion into the cargo area• MOISTURE ABSORPTION– All wood components absorb moisture.Even with proper coating on the panel, the panel joint is not coated and willtrap and absorb moisture– Causes swelling and shrinking andweight gain• DELAMINATION– Attributed to moisture absorption, shrinking and swelling– Impacts and daily wear & tear contributeto this type of failure– Quality of bond and coating is critical, but over time can not hold upto the environment• PAINT ADHESION– Wood is not a good substrate for paint– Poor adhesion or bad preparation canlead to paint failure– Moisture, shrinking and swelling putstress on paint or coatingDuraPlate ® Doors• Strength & Durability in High-Damage Areas• Exceptional Protection AgainstPuncture, Deformation and Corrosion• Will Not Absorb MoisturePUNCTURE TESTUsing a fork lift tine until puncturewas acquiredDuraPlate – 4,810 ft. lbs.Plywood – 2,676 ft. lbs.HARDWARE ATTACHMENT TESTVarious hinges mounted to 6”x 6” panel andstressed under tension– Hinges failed before the fastener to the substrate.CORROSION TESTPanels subjected to ASTM B117 Salt Fog testfor 1,000 hrs.– Showed no red rusting of skin edges– No lifting, flaking or pitting of paintSTIFFNESS TEST – Illustrated below*Using a hydraulic press until panel failureDuraPlate – 11” (end of stroke length ofcylinder) without failurePlywood – 9” panel failed*DuraPlate Panel• CORROSION– Failure in or lack of plating on fasteners– Galvanic reaction with dissimilar metalscan be a cause of corrosion– Moisture absorbed and retained inwood panel accelerates failurePlywood Panel
