THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER CLUB NOTES CHIRNSIDE PARK After the rain gods answered our prayers and gave the ground a good soaking for the week the sky cleared for Saturdays clash with the league leaders. KB had set the boys for a hard contest for the day. WB jumped us at the start with 3 quick goals and at the first change were 6 goals in front. A reshuffle of the backline and more aggression at the ball saw us dominate the start of the 2nd qtr but with inaccurate kicking we couldn't close the gap. The second half again saw us matching WB around the ground but not matching them on the scoreboard. A good tough match played in a competitive spirit. The downer for the day was the loss of Adam Delulio in for his 1st senior game with a knee injury. Better Players: Justin C, Steve P, Daniel M, Chris C, Greg H, Darren S. The reserves will not take any pleasure out of their game after not scoring in the 1st qtr, then kicking 4 straight in the 2nd to be 25 point behind at half time. WB powered away from us in the 2nd half, again keeping us scoreless in another qtr to post a convincing win. Better Players: Glenn L, Joel B, Ben W. Colts coach Peter Mac must have kicked a black cat, 5 minutes before game time he found his 18th player, with 6 players not available from the team his boys went out and matched it with WB for 3 qtrs, eventually WB ran out with the win but a gusty effort from the 18 who took to the field. Better Players: Chris G, Josh R, John S, Joel Mac, Matt B, Matt O'R. EASTERN LIONS Under the watchful eyes of club legends, the 35th anniversary of the Eastern Lions saw a clash with rivals The Basin Bears. There is no doubt that the hard work is being done by the reserves side but it didn't pay off. The culprit, in this game, were basic football errors A handball at the foot of the player or a kick too wide was all that stopped the hard working side from capitalizing on gritty play. Though the final score does not indicate, the game was close with The Basin kicking away in the last quarter. The action started at 2:00pm! The best $5 spent last Saturday was at The Basin ground - no game that day came close to the drama and the excitement displayed in the seniors match. Some good signs in the first quarter but the score indicated much work needed to be done, the score being 5.1.31 to 2.2.14 in favour of The Basin. By half time, hearts sunk as club great Dylan Strydom and the rock down back Andrew Schwab went down. At the beginning of the 3rd quarter it was bear hunting season and the Lions were looking to shoot a few. Two yellow cards left us 2 players down but we had a few aces up our sleeve with solid defence by Devenish, Armstrong, Mitchell, Symons and wildcard 47 Fourth Division himself Steve Dix. Dylan Strydrom was given the OK and came back to the ground to capture the hearts and imagination of the crowd. Relentless attack of the football from both sides created a see-saw battle in the dying minutes of the game. Finally the siren went and the Lions had a well earned 4 point VICTORY! FERNTREE GULLY Fantastic turnaround for our senior boys last week disposing of the more fancied Kilsyth, who gave us a good lesson the first time we met. Our press for the finals continues with three great wins in as many weeks. Our Reserves struggled a bit this week coming off a great win last week. Hopefully only short lived as we make amends this week. 18's started well but with numbers down and some undisciplined actions from some players were easily overrun in the end. A great fighting last quarter by boys in a never say die effort. To all former players and supporters, the club will be holding a 30th Anniversary for the 1975 Reserves premiership team. Any players from this time who would like to attend our match day function on the 6th AUGUST please contact J.T 0409404519 or Billy Mitchell 0419861950 FOREST HILL A slow start in the Seniors saw them go down by 15 points to third placed Whitehorse last week. Fantastic effort to come from 5 goals down to get with a 9 points before they kicked the sealer. If we could apply our last quarter efforts from the outset we would find ourselves in a much better position at this stage of the year. Best players included Mick Gaul, Hillsy, Sticks Ryan, fez, Rhino and Pembo. Heads up we can take a lot from the game and look forward to a trip to Ferntree Gully and hopefully a return to the winners list. The Ressie's continue on their merry way thrashing Pioneers by 150points and cementing their spot on top of the ladder. Well done to Anners who kicked 5 and was in the best along with big Matty, “Ping” Farley, Leeso and Lamby. Remarkable effort from the bench again! Colts struggled after starting badly and eventually went down by 27 points. Better players included Adams, Barclay, Mahon, Beere, Fawkes and Virag. GLEN WAVERLEY HAWKS They say that bad kicking is bad football but I would say that we kicked ourselves out of the game in the second quarter when we kick two seven Which left us a point down at the main break. Full credit must go to Surrey Park they took the game away from us in the third quarter. A lot of sole searching after the game two in a row that Wood, Fitty and the boys know that should have and could have won. The two had an even more horrible day. A great game from Footy who must be pushing for a game in the ones. The 23rd of July is The Presidents Dinner only a couple of tables left so get your name down and see Andrea for a ticket and a seat. It is sure to be a big night. KILSYTH 2 out of 3 for the Cougars last weekend. The Colts recorded another good win but their shooting at goal wasn't as good as it should have been. Danny Pullen showed the benefit of a stint in the ones and turned in a very good game on the wing. Todd Lucas was terrific and his younger brother Dean showed he can mix it with the big boys and do very well. The result of the round was the stunning performance by Vou's Twos. They played very good football to win by the best part of 100 points. Staf put in 4 top quarters at centre half forward and it was great to have Djuka back running the lines and winning plenty of ball. Welcome to big Maurice who was a real focal point at full forward, kicking 4 himself and giving a few off to others. Great effort boys. The ones again went down by a narrow margin and inaccurate kicking can be squarely blamed. Lachy, Rochy and Bourkie were good. SURREY PARK It will be a great day today for Surrey Park with trainer Peter Axton celebrating 700 games of football. Pete started strapping ankles back in 1979 and has been an East Camberwell and Surrey Park stalwart ever since. The club will welcome back many former legends today for a celebration of Pete’s achievements over the years. Last week the Panthers celebrated three wins (seniors, reserves and ladies) for the first time in a long time. It 48 THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER Fourth Division was great to hear the club song ring out loudly again. Welcome to the three new players that played for the first time last week, also. A reminder that all players must pay the last of their memberships today or Tuesday. See Richie to finalise. Co-tools of the week: Against a cupsized field of contenders Henno got the nod last week for his not-too-modest strip show after the formal. He was obviously excited because that hat wasn't budging. Jess was the co-tool, for unknown reasons. Spy must stay up later next time. Ladies: The girls had a great win last week against Hadfield at Surrey Park. Congrats to Nicole and her charges. Milestones: Daniel Kirwan - 100 games THE BASIN Well, we’ve hit the crossroads. Are we going to have a big say in the shape of 4th division this year, or are we going to let the other sides run over us. Its up to you guys. The seniors had their second consecutive loss for the season. Going down to a passionate Eastern team. Snake had a stellar game in full back, Ando was great again and our old/new recruit Matty James was very good as well. You've got to get to training guys, working together we can achieve anything. The twos have had a couple of good weeks, coming off a win against Waverly, they won comfortably aginst the Lions. Trax was best on ground, No 18 Steffa was good too. It was great to see Commo back after a knee injury. The U'18's are also going very well. They had the goods over Bayswater, winning easily. KMAC was best, James K was good and Daniel Read was great as well. The finals are still 7 weeks away fellas, so dont get ahead of yourselves.
