LET THE SEASON BEGIN
Where did the off-season go?? Yes, there are plenty of people
out there saying “what off season?” with the gap between the
finish of 2004 and the start to preseason training and
preparation for 2005 shortening every year. Many months
have passed since Noble Park, Wantirna Sth, Rowville and
Heathmont all held aloft their 2004 premiership trophies,
with Heathmont to unfurl their premiership flag today at HE
Parker. Best of luck to all clubs in the new season.
EFL TIPPING
Think you’re an expert on all things EFL? Know who’s is
going to win out of Mitcham and East Burwood this
weekend? Like to pit your wits against other like-minded
EFL supporters? Now’s your chance! In season 2005 you
will be able to show your EFL knowledge in our online
tipping competition. You will be able to enter online tips for
the EFL Seniors, Colts and Under 16 competitions, and be
able to see how your knowledge fairs against other EFL
supporters. Not only can you enter the overall competition,
but you can set up your own private competition, and invite
friends, family and fellow supporters. Head to the TIPPING
button on the right hand menu of the website, and register to
enter the 2005 EFL Online Tipping Competition.
MEDIA COVERAGE
Tune in 6pm Wednesday night to Eastern FM 98.1 for a new
program to hit the radio airwaves. The program will take a
different look at all things EFL, featuring plenty of
interviews with people from around the Eastern Football
League. The show will feature regular player in focus
interviews, will dive back into the past to chat to past players
and coaches from the EFL and will also look at what is news
around the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The program will
also feature a dedicated junior segment each week. Tune in
this Wednesday 6pm for the EFL Wednesday night radio
show on 98.1 Eastern FM.
Unfortunately 2005 will see no Eastern Football Show on
channel 31. This has come about due to a price increase
requested by C31 to the tune off 300%, as well as the poor
selection of time slots on offer. The league will revisit the
situation with C31 during the season, but it was not feasible
to continue our coverage if we could not gain access to
timeslots we requested, and therefore were unable broadcast
our program to widest viewing audience possible. We will
however be supplying segment information to the Southern
FL show on Saturday morning between 9am – 10:30am on a
regular basis in 2005. More information on this next week.
DIVISION ONE EARLY START
Wondering why Mitcham, East Burwood, Donvale and
Blackburn are all playing their round 3 clashes before the
season starts?? This year Mitcham and Blackburn are once
again meeting on ANZAC day (round 2), which happens to
fall on a Monday in 2005. Both clubs felt there would be not
enough recovery time between their Monday ANZAC day
clash and their round 3 Saturday clash, so they approached
their round 3 opposition teams, East Burwood and Donvale,
to see whether they would play their matches prior to that
start of the official season. A Sunday game for round 3 was
looked at, but it was unable to work in with fixturing for the
juniors. Both opposition clubs agreed to the change, hence
why the four teams are playing this weekend.
Former Templestowe player Eddie Betts (pictured)
was late last year given an opportunity to play football
at the highest level when he was recruited by Carlton
in the December preseason draft. The Blues surprised
many with their selection of Betts using their number
three pick, overlooking a number of experienced
players on offer in the draft. Betts, who won the 2002
EFL combined colts best and fairest, played the last
two seasons in the TAC competition with the Calder
Cannons, and was expected to be picked up in the
November draft but was overlooked. He then trained
with Carlton in the hope of being selected and was
rewarded for his efforts. Betts has repaid the faith
Carlton had in him, playing most of the preseason
games, and has played in both the opening games of
the blues season, kicking two and three goals
respectively.
NEW ADDITIONS TO EFL BOARD
Former Australian Cricket Board CEO, Graham Halbish,
has been appointed to the board of the Eastern Football
League. The addition of Halbish to the board is a coup for
the league, as he has had a long affinity with football and
cricket both at a local and national level having served as
player, coach, committee member and administrator at all
levels of both sports.
Halbish is currently chairman of the Monteray Group
Limited (a Software & Services Company) as well as the
General Manger of Japan-Australia Project Support Co.
"With the strong strategic planning process which has
been developed within the organisation, the EFL board
plays a vital role in guiding the future direction of the
league. Strong, experienced directors are required to
facilitate this process" CEO Craig Braddy said. "With the
appointment of Graham Halbish, we will be gaining a
wealth of experience in all areas of sport administration.
His knowledge and network of contacts within sport and
business in this country will no doubt be beneficial to our
organisation. It will be good to have someone of Graham's
experience providing the board with a new perspective on
the myriad of issues that we face in today's sporting
climate."
Along with the addition of Halbish, former East
Burwood president Peter Bailey will also be joining the
board, following the retirement of long serving director
Steve Semken. “This is a really exciting time as the board
is about to undertake a full review of our strategic plan.
The addition of Peter to our organisation will provide a
fresh perspective to this process as he has an exceptional
history in both business and sport” Braddy said.
Bailey has been in professional practice for more than
20 years and is currently the principal of Peter Bailey
and Associates, a consultant accounting firm
specialising in business advice and property
management. He is also a former state president of
Apex, immediate past president of the East Burwood
Football Club and a sponsor of the Eastern Ranges
Football Club.
“Peter has experienced first hand the challenges facing
sporting and community clubs and his knowledge will
be invaluable in driving our organisation forward. He
has guided the direction of several key community
organisations, and he has a played football and cricket in
the Mid-Murray league in the country before playing
senior football, and coaching both senior and junior
teams in Melbourne” said Braddy.
In other developments from the board, Bruce Peak has
stepped into the role of deputy chairman of the board,
which is now comprised of: Chairman, Steve Jones
(principal in accounting firm ATM Consultants); Deputy
Chairman, Bruce Peak (managing director of an
international gas and oil production company); and
directors: Jim Walker (property services contract
manager with RMIT); Rob Sharpe (general manager of
sales and marketing (international) with an energy
resources company); Paul Payne (systems and training
development manager with a global technologies firm);
Brian Hawkins (project manager with a major
construction company); Terry Cheshire (managing
director of a building and construction firm); Graham
Halbish (chairman of a software and services company).
BETTS A BLUE / HEIGHT A HAWK
In the rookie draft also held
last December, former
Mitcham goal sneak, Kristian
Height was selected by
Hawthorn. Height had a great
2004 season, coming runner
up in Box Hill Hawks best and
fairest count as well as being
named in the VFL Team of the
Year. Height came fourth in
the 2003 EFL division one best
and fairest count, and was
runner up in Mitcham’s best and fairest counts in
2002 and 2003 before moving to the box Hill Hawks
in 2004. Josh Gibson, who also played a few games
for Mitcham in 2003 was selected by the Kangaroos
in the rookie draft.
From the Chairman’s Desk
WELCOME
Season 2005 is now upon us and it is timely to write to
inform the EFL community of the events of the off-season
and the exciting new arrangements that have been put in
place to assist our club committees and to provide much
needed funds across the board.
SPONSORS
Principal Sponsor Changes Face……..
Most of you would be very aware that for the past 10 years,
the principal sponsor of the EFL has been Concord Insurance
Group. However, with changes resulting from the Financial
Services Reform Act, the company has had to undergo some
changes. As a result our new principal sponsor is BJS
Insurance Group. You will be dealing with the same friendly
and efficient people that you have always dealt with but as of
the start of this season you will notice a completely new logo
and corporate livery.
I thank BJS Insurance Group for their continuing support and
look forward to working with them in 2005 and beyond.
Let’s welcome our new sponsors who have come on
board…..
TECH-RENTALS ‘kick on’ as our new football sponsor
It is very pleasing to announce that TECH-RENTALS a
multi-national technology company whose Australian head
office is located in Ringwood, have agreed to be our football
sponsor for the next three years. TECH-RENTALS is a
technology company who hires, sells and installs all forms of
technology. TECH-RENTALS footballs will be used in all
competitive games from the commencement of 2005 and I
can highly recommend that you give TECH-RENTALS a
call next time you are seeking to hire or buy any form of
technology. Call Stephen Spaull at TECH-RENTALS on
9871 1200 and let him know that you are from the EFL – he
will be happy to do a good deal for you!
AAPT take up naming rights to our finals series
It is with great excitement that I advise that for the first time
in the history of the league, a company has taken the
opportunity of sponsoring all senior and junior finals series
matches. Therefore, all grades will be competing for the
AAPT Premiership Cup and the AAPT Premiership Flag.
“Cop A Call For Your Club Campaign”
AAPT will be making contact with all clubs and their players
with a view to marketing/promoting the club and its
significant events to its members and to offer a fantastic
telephone deal.
For each person who changes telecommunications company
(and stays connected for 90 days), the CLUB will receive an
incentive of $10.00 for supporting the program.
Simply, the clubs don’t have to do anything but advise their
people that they might receive a call and they will receive
money for each person signing on.
Multinational company IMG sees the benefits of being
involved with the EFL and are to provide e-commerce and etail
solutions for the EFL and clubs.
It is with great pride that I announce that well know
management company IMG has identified the benefits of
being involved with the EFL and its clubs and they have
agreed to provide websites, e-commerce and e-tail solutions
to our clubs.
The e-commerce solution would allow all clubs to be able to
collect membership fees, clothing sales funds, sell annual
ball tickets etc. Simply, the club can email, post, or print and
distribute the ‘invoice’ and then the recipient can either pay
over the phone, via internet transfer or can provide their
credit card details for the club to process.
There is no cost to the club for this service however a 5%
transaction fee would apply.
Therefore, the club would receive the full amount of its
revenue and the transaction fee can be passed on to the end
consumer or absorbed by the club.
Further, IMG will be providing e-tail facilities for all clubs
where they can create their own e-store connected to their
website where their players, members can buy all of their
club apparel and social tickets.
Again, there is no charge for the provision of this service, but
a 5% transaction fee (paid in the same manner as above) is
applicable.
This program certainly is a win-win situation. The clubs get
a cutting-edge technology solution for free that is currently
being used by the AFL and AFL clubs, they receive the full
amount of revenue that they currently get and the club
members can access a multi-payment program that makes it
too easy to support their club!
GLOBAL BUDGET
Good governance dictates that the board undertakes a
rigorous review of the global budget and sets appropriate
financial plans for the current financial year and into the
future. Our current budget has been confirmed and the board
has found it necessary to critically analyse certain policies
and subsequent spending.
These are not limited to but include:
Channel 31 Eastern Football Show
Channel 31 has increased the cost of screening our weekly
television show by over 300%, and has not been able to offer
us time slots we have asked for. As a result, it has been
resolved to withdraw from this form of media in 2005.
Senior Representative Football
After two years competing in interleague football with the
Diamond Valley Football League the tangible and intangible
benefits (and associated costs) of our overall interleague
program were considered. While there is no doubt that there
are benefits to all clubs and the league from competing in
representative football, it has been resolved that the EFL will
not field its senior A and B teams and its colts team in 2005.
However, the junior representative teams will continue in the
Metropolitan Championships. During the course of the year,
alternative programs will be investigated with
recommendations to go to the board later this year with a
view to fielding representative teams again.
TRANSFER TRIAL
As indicated at the delegates meeting in June last year, the
EFL, along with the DVFL, SFL and MNPFL is trialling a
radical new system of regulating the movement of players
between clubs and between leagues.
The system is designed to reduce the workload of club
administrators by streamlining the manner in which players
can transfer from club to club.
Initial indications are that this trail is a raging success and it
would be envisaged that subject to ratification by Football
Victoria it will be rolled out for all football leagues in the
future.
ELECTRONIC TEAM SHEETS
The EFL is leading the way again in football innovation by
introducing a system of electronic team sheets from the
commencement of season 2005.
This system allows clubs to access their player database prior
to the commencement of the first round and select the players
for each team in their club. They can also add all officials’
names to the list.
They can then print this information in a team sheet format
straight from their computer which will allow space for best
players, goal kickers and the quarter by quarter scores.
At the completion of the day’s play, the club can then recall
the teamsheet, input the scores, best players and goal kickers
and this information will be available with the ladders etc
within an hour of the conclusion of the game. The following
week, only the changes to the team need to be made which
means clubs will no longer have to hand write each players
name, number etc and they will not have to input the same
officials names each week either.
By utilising this facility, the system will AUTOMATICALLY
add the game played to the game tally of that player.
Therefore, from this year, players commencing in the junior
ranks will be able to access their career statistics that include
the number of games, goals kicked, average number of times
they have been in the best players and even the venue where
they have kicked the most goals in a game.
This information will be able to be printed at the end of the
year – so, provided the club provides us with the number of
career games prior to the commencement of this season –
they will never have to add game tallies again! Information
for the deadlines for submission of the spreadsheet and the
format required has been forwarded to clubs via email.
UMPIRES
Range of umpire initiatives to be introduced this year
The EFL employs the largest single group of umpires in the
country – numbering some 450 at any one time. The league
loses some 50 umpires every year, and with the league
experiencing growth on an annual basis, we need to recruit
more than 60 new umpires and train them to a sufficient
standard to officiate in our games.
Therefore, the board have identified that umpires are critical
to our ongoing health as an organisation and pivotal to the
successful and efficient running of our competition. Hence
considerable time, effort and resources have been devoted to
the recruitment, training and development of our umpires.
The EFL is the only league that I am aware of that employs,
field, boundary and goal coaches who are supported by
development officers for each discipline, assistant director
for all umpires, a junior director and his assistant, board
secretary and full administrative support via the league
office. These resources are vital to the ongoing development
of our umpire group and this is evidenced in the fact that EFL
has grown its umpire numbers in every year since 1996
despite declines in umpire numbers in many leagues and
associations.
This is also largely attributed to the manner in which our
clubs and their personnel interact with our umpires which is
a credit to all clubs.
However, we can get better and plans are currently being
formulated for an awareness campaign to be rolled out in
2005.
There are a range of other programs that have been
implemented by the board this year and they are:
Shopping centre promotion
The EFL along with the EFL Umpires Association are
facilitating a promotion for umpires at Knox City Centre this
year. This promotion is aimed at improving the profile of
umpires, in particular EFL umpires and attempt to enlist
some new recruits.
Attention for Retention Campaign
Part of the new Umpires CBA signed off in late December,
provides for a collaborative effort of the EFL and the EFLUA
to implement a program we are calling Attention for
Retention.
This program will match all new umpires with an
experienced ‘mentor’ who will make regular contact with the
new umpire, assist in fast-tracking their education and from
feedback to the individual umpire and to the umpire coaches
on the progress of the novice umpire.
Umpire recruitment initiatives in local schools
Our director of umpiring, Kevin Smith has implemented a
range of development initiatives in local schools in the
eastern region. These programs are aimed at attracting new
umpires to football, training them up and more importantly
signing them up to officiate in the EFL.
In fact, Kevin is currently presenting the Level O and Level
One course recently introduced at Norwood Secondary
College which is one of few programs of this nature to be run
separately from a recognised football league or umpire
association and is the first of these programs to be run in any
school in Victoria. Kevin is now in constant contact with five
schools and is getting introduced to many more.
The result of these programs has seen 6 new umpires
recruited fro Billanook and 8 new umpires from the Knox
School in 2004 and there has already been an additional 10
umpire’s sign up from the Knox School this year – so the
investment in this vital area is paying dividends for us.
I would like to close this edition with an acknowledgement of
all of our sponsors – without them the cost of competing in
the EFL would be much higher. I would also like to wish all
clubs, coaches, players and supporters all the very best for
season 2005 and I wish you every success – but remember –
at the end of the day we play the game for enjoyment!
UMPIRES CORNER
HOT IN THE SUMMER!
The obligatory summer break was not as long as usual
for the members of the Umpires Association this
Summer. For the first year, the Umpires commenced
their pre-season training campaign under the watchful
eye of 2004 Field Umpire-of-the-Year Bart Maaskant
on the 22 November.
Bart introduced a wide range of fitness-building
activities that allowed umpires to regulate their
training and incorporate certain cross-training
principles all geared towards the development of a
sound base-level of cardio-respiratory fitness.
Using a variety of locations including our training
base the Croydon Athletics Track, Heatherdale
Reserve, Wantirna Park, Ruffey Lake Park –
Doncaster, Lilydale Lake, Ringwood Lake and The
Melbourne Tan running track, Bart designed and
developed a range of running activities using a variety
of inclines to challenge all participants.
This training, combined with several sessions at
Ringwood Swimming Pool and several cycling
sessions has allowed the members of the umpiring
fraternity to consolidate and further develop levels of
Under the watchful guidance of our recently
there is always an emphasis to ‘work within yourself’
combined with the obligatory stretching and hydration
As the season has drawn nearer, the number of
umpires attending our Monday and Wednesday
At just 26, Adam Rossoukas, has entered the big-time of local
football, taking on the senior role at division four club Surrey
Park, whilst becoming one of the youngest senior coaches in
the EFL. Rossoukas takes on the role after a year as the
assistant coach at Templestowe Football Club and stints
coaching high-level junior teams at Templestowe and
Alphington. As well the senior appointment, Surrey Park also
welcomes back club legend Vinnie Piccioli as reserves coach
in 2005. Piccioli has played more than 250 games for the club
and was most recently the reserves coach at division three
club Nunawading.
Surrey Park President Rod Egan said he had no doubts that
Rossoukas was the best person to lead the Panthers in 2005.
“Adam has all the qualities to be a successful coach,” Egan
said. “His application for the coaching position was
outstanding and we believe he can take this club forward.
Adam possesses all the qualities we were looking for in a new
senior coach – great professionalism, passion, and the ability
to lead the club.”
While the Panthers senior side finished a disappointing
sixth in 2004, the reserves team took out the flag – the club’s
first EFL premiership after three only years in the
competition. Rossoukas said he was looking forward to the
challenge of his first senior coaching role. “I like the idea of
taking on a side from the lower divisions and working to
achieve ongoing success,” he said. “Already I sense there’s a
great enthusiasm and excitement about the place. We are
building a strong list blending youth and experience and
building on the reserves premiership last year.”
He said his time working with senior coach Wayne Harmes
at Templestowe had been very important in his coaching
development. “I learned so much from Wayne about being
cool in a crisis and very positive at all times.”
DIVISION THREE
BAYSWATER will be keen to break the sequence of
Division 2 relegates staying in the third tier the next season.
Respect will be the team’s buzzword this year.
COLDSTREAM look set to return to finals action with a
stronger list and a more settled pre-season this time around.
DONCASTER EAST will welcome the return of Islami and
Murphy, which should ensure a finals place.
HEATHMONT will benefit from having both Hartman’s and
keeping their squad together, which will ensure they are
competitive in Division 3.
MOOROOLBARK have done well in the Colts recently, but
they have had difficulty in getting the younger guys adapting
to senior football.
NUNAWADING have recruited well in the off-season to
ensure that they rise from the bottom half to the top half of the
division.
SOUTH CROYDON have minimal changes last year’s
squad. They face stiff competition from many teams as they
strive for back-to-back Grand Final berths.
TEMPLESTOWE look set to make inroads into the latter
weeks of the finals. The loss of Parke is a setback but Croad
is a vital pick-up for the Dragons.
UPPER FERNTREE GULLY will be amongst the pack as
they intend blooding more youth for the club’s benefit in the
long term.
WARRANDYTE will have another year of consolidation and
should be able to jump a spot or two higher than last year’s
eighth.
Round 1 Tips (2004 – 65/90) - South Croydon, Upper FTG,
Coldstream, Templestowe, Doncaster East.
DIVISION FOUR
CHIRNSIDE PARK have what it takes to climb up the
ladder, as the Cougars have a wealth of experience joining the
club this season.
EASTERN LIONS have the makings of a strong side, with
the makings of a potent on-ball division.
FERNTREE GULLY might have to wait another year to
bound up the ladder. They will notch up more wins than last
year’s two.
FOREST HILL have the nucleus of last year’s side, but will
face stiff opposition as they battle for a top four spot.
GLEN WAVERLEY HAWKS look to be more than making
up the numbers in their debut year. Best of luck to the newest
EFL senior club.
KILSYTH are hoping that some late signings keep them
amongst the top tier.
SURREY PARK are in a period of rejuvenation. Will the
Templestowe recruits help get them back into the ‘Four?
THE BASIN’s playing strength is relatively unchanged,
which will give them a good shot at another Grand Final
berth.
WAVERLEY BLUES are back into a position of strength
with many of their players returning to Mount Waverley
Reserve.
WHITEHORSE PIONEERS will benefit form the filtering
up of Colts players and few changes from last year’s playing
list.
JUNIOR NEWS
KILSYTH JUNIORS RECEIVE COUNTRY VISITORS
During the preseason, most clubs organise practise matches
with local clubs to give their sides match practise, and to get
back into the swing of things prior to the home and away
season starting. Kilsyth have taken their preseason to another
level this year, hosting junior sides from Shepparton in a
joint effort with a local netball club.
On Sunday 10 April 2005 the Kilsyth Junior Football Club,
joined by the Kilsyth East Netball Club, will play host to
junior teams from the Shepparton based Rumbalara Football
and Netball Clubs, at Pinks Reserve, Liverpool Road,
Kilsyth. Netball matches are being played at the Netball
Courts, Wyuna Walk, Mooroolbark. The Rumbalara teams
are made up from predominantly aboriginal boys and girls
from the Shepparton region. Their football teams play in the
strong Central Goulburn Football League and Police Chief
Commissioner Christine Nixon, is their No. 1 ticket holder.
Kilsyth footballers will play matches in the U/14’s and
U/16’s age divisions commencing at 12 noon whist the
netball matches will be played in the U/13’s and U/15’s age
groups commencing around 2.00pm.
Kilsyth Juniors President Brian Hillier said that “This whole
idea of playing practice matches against Rumbalara came
about after a chance meeting with their President Paul
Briggs prior to last Christmas. We agreed to speak again in
the New Year and he mentioned about their club having
netball teams so an approach was made to the Kilsyth East
Netball Club. Their President, Carmen DeLaRue, and
committee quickly accepted the invitation and joined with us
in the planning and organising for what we think will be a
wonderful sporting spectacle to watch. Rumbalara has
produced some good sporting talent in recent years,
particularly in the AFL, and I’m sure their current crop of
junior players possess, potentially, those same skill levels.”
The games have been made possible with sponsorship from
Club Kilsyth, who will be at the ground on the day with
showbags and other promotional material, and the Shire of
Yarra Ranges who are providing the teams with match day
footballs and netballs.
Hillier also sees the practice matches as a way of
bouncing racism out of sport. “Our club, and the Kilsyth
East Netball Club, are most desirous to expose our
players to diverse groups and in doing so hopefully
minimise the risk of inappropriate behaviour in the long
term by developing attitudes for respect of others. We see
the opportunity to play against Rumbalara will go some
way in achieving this goal”.
Third Division
BAYSWATER
We welcome all our members, supporters and sponsors
to another exciting season of football. Our coach, Marc
Hardy, has again put the players through a rigorous preseason
and their fitness is showing the results he was
after. We are looking forward to hosting our season
opener against Coldstream and we extend an invitation
to all of their players and supporters to come upstairs
after the game and enjoy the social atmosphere. There
are several new players to the club this year and we
wish them all the best in their respective matches. The
President's Luncheon is on today starting at 12:30pm at
a cost of $25 which includes a two course meal with
beer, wine and soft drinks until 2pm. Everyone is
welcome but get in early as seats will be limited.
Memberships are now available, so see Paul Riddell to
purchase yours. Help is required in the canteen this year
so if you can lend a hand, see the girls in there serving.
Our first social function kicks off tonight from 8pm
with a Bad Shirt night and a rocking DJ. Everyone is
welcome with a $5 entry for the guys and girls in for
free. Good luck to all three teams today and lets make
sure we have three strong victories to celebrate!!
COLDSTREAM
It's a new year and there have been many changes
around the club for season 2005. On behalf of the
committee I'd like to welcome back to the club as senior
coach Patty Glassborow and reserves coach Steve Price.
Their enthusiasm and new ideas will add a new
dimension to the club. I'd also like to welcome to the
club all the new players, their partners and families,
Braebs, Lorks, Harpy and Kirka, and of course those
who have come back Micky Freeman, Bobby Wheeler,
Hawko, Shano, Janss, Richo and Lee Selkrig. And a big
welcome to senior footy to Jarrod Robertson and Josh
Avenill!! Good to see you boys stick with the club.
Let's all get behind the coaches, players and committee
and have a year to remember. Good luck to the boys
today! Social News: Next week DJ. Be there!!
DONCASTER EAST
Welcome supporters, sponsors, parents, past players and
players to another season. We particularly welcome the
new boys to the Club we hope that you guys enjoy the
season and help us achieve success. We all know that
that there is no better feeling than winning. We have a
great year ahead of us not only watching the boys but
the fantastic functions that we have planned. There has
been a lot of hard work done behind the scenes and over
the summer by your Committee and we look forward to
celebrating many many wins this year. We wish the
following new players to DEFC much success namely,
Daniel Chapman, Dash Islami, Steve Bugeja, Paul
D'Andrea, Rami Ayoubi, Mitchell Watt, Justin Gatto,
Andrew Divitaris and Jake Vittorio. We also want to
welcome back Dash Islami, Leigh Murphy, Rocky
the club. Good Luck for the season. Go Panthers.
HEATHMONT
After a well celebrated Grand Final, we now look
forward to a new season in third division. Welcome to
all the new faces at Heathmont, including our new
President, Brad Munro, and Coach, Paul Bruton. Our
under 18’s have merged with Kilsyth this year, so all the
best for the season guys. Reserves and Seniors both
look good after a few good wins in the practice matches,
and we all look forward to great 2005.
MOOROOLBARK
Welcome to season 2005 from everyone at Mooroolbark
Football Club. We have retained the services of big
Andy Goodwin as playing coach of the Seniors. Andy is
confident that the young players from last season will be
capable of taking the next step and, with a couple of
seasoned campaigners returning to the club, we hope to
push up the ladder and play finals footy. Mark Gallagher
has taken over the role of Reserves coach and with the
great numbers we have had at training, his biggest task
will be trying to give everyone a game. Peter Weston
has the job with the Colts and if practice match form is
any indication, he should have a good year with a very
skilful bunch of boys. With 3 very competitive practice
matches under our belt we are now ready for the real
thing against Donny East today. After the game head
back to the clubrooms for presentations and hot roast
beef rolls. GO MUSTANGS !!!
NUNAWADING
A big welcome to all Nunawading players, coaches,
support staff, sponsors, life members and supporters to
season 2005! A special welcome to all those that have
joined the Lion's Den this year as we strive to "reach
new heights" - new players (Sam Bates, Michael
Britten, Nick Dutton, Mathew Groat, Christian
Holdsworth, Damian Sampimon, and David Weerden),
returning premiership players (Paul Biondo, David
CLUB NOTES
Ciro, and Adam Prestigiacomo), new and returning
coaching staff (Brett Davidson, Paul Dennis, and Nick
Uren) and major sponsors (Camfil Farr Air Filtration
and Epsilon Instrumentation). After a gruelling preseason
it is with much anticipation that we look forward
to our Round 1 clash out at Templestowe today. It is first
chance to see how our playing group can perform in the
"real stuff" as well as show off our new Club kit. I'm
sure everyone will agree that it looks fantastic! Most
importantly though, both our sides know we that we
will have to play at our best today to bring home wins.
Whatever the result, everyone is encouraged to stay at
Tempy for a beer or two after the game before heading
back to the Lion's Den for awards at 6:45pm sharp. Be
sure to be available the first Social Event for the year,
after our Round 3 game in a fortnight (April 23), as well
as the Anzac Day Golf Tournament (April 25). A
reminder also to all players to get their Membership and
Insurance settled (see Rusty) as well as recruiting your
Player Sponsors (see Shev). Go Lions!
SOUTH CROYDON
Welcome to all players and their families, members,
supporters and sponsors to the Kennel. In the off-season
Lucas Paul was appointed Senior Coach and takes over
from Tom Humphrey. Best wishes to Tom who has been
appointed Assistant Coach at Vermont. Other coaching
appointments include Craig Hanley as Assistant Coach,
Gary Meyers as Reserves coach and Noel King as Colts
Assistant Coach. There are numerous new faces in the
playing ranks as well as players who have returned to
the Club. So after a hard preseason it is great to have the
real season commence. We encourage all supporters to
TEMPLESTOWE
Welcome back to all players, supporters & sponsors for
2005. Congratulations to all new players who pull on
the jumper for the first time this week, and welcome to
the Templestowe family. The club is looking forward to
a big year, following on from the continual
improvement from 2003-04. Good luck to the 'Freak'
Darren Keamy on his first game as captain of the club,
THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER
a very well deserved honour to a fabulous player &
clubman. Thanks to all those sponsors who are back on
board for 2005, especially Blackburn Nissan, Barry
Plant Real Estate, Dragon Chemicals, Templestowe
Living Room & Degani's Cafe. Go Stowers.
UPPER FERNTREE GULLY
Welcome back for season 2005. A few "new" faces at
the "front office" this year with Dave Beilken and Pete
De Groot swapping roles as President and Vice
president respectively and Tim Edwards taking over
from Ed as Senior Coach. John O'Brien has stepped up
to Assistant coach, and we wish Warren Lechner all the
best as he steps up from player to playing coach in our
reserves. Paul Dale also takes up the challenge of being
both a senior player and coach of our colts. Good luck,
guys. Our numbers have been fantastic at training and
there is a real buzz around the place. We have had two
good "hit-outs" against Boronia and Upwey and plenty
of good form produced two good wins for the preseason.
We welcome senior recruits in Shane Flynn,
Grant Noonan, Patrick Fagan & Michael Bennett as
well as last year's U/16s who join the Colts in the next
step towards senior football. Special cheerio to Greg
Jarvis who is recovering from emergency surgery. Hope
to see you back in the "van" soon!! All the best to
everyone for a great season ahead...the ball's in our
court and we are willing and raring to go! This one's for
you, Tez! You made it!!
WARRANDYTE
Welcome all players, members and supporters of
Warrandyte Football Club to Season 2005. Thank you to
Grant Egan, Terry Ryan and all of our sponsors for their
continued support of the club and Gala Dinner. 2005
Memberships are available from Terry Sloan or Jimmy
Logan. With Peter Green and Brendan Darveniza taking
over the helm and the addition of our recruits we look
forward to a promising season. The summer training
program has been a hard but enjoyable few months and
the team has bonded well together. After solid hit outs
against Glen Waverley, Knox and Ashwood, today is
when the hard work starts to pay off against last year’s
runner up South Croydon. Get behind the boys this year
and see an exciting brand of running football. “Crab
McClaw to Tuckers, across to Dr Thompson who drills
the pass to Magic Hands.... goal” Go Bloods!

CLUB NOTES
Fourth Division
CHIRNSIDE PARK
Here we go again, after seven short months and a
full on pre season we are poised again to tackle the
new season with high hopes for a successful
campaign. We welcome our new players, families,
supporters and sponsors to our club. Our vets side
has moved over to the EFL after four good years in
the YVMDFL and we wish them well as they kick
off their season this weekend. It may be early to say
thanks, but to the coaching staff Kevin B, Brad H,
Kevin B, Evan W and Peter Mc we appreciate the
many hours you have put in during the preseason.
We play host to the Basin today and we look
forward to a tough game as we each try to start the
season with a win. Go Panthers
EASTERN LIONS
Firstly I would like to thank Eastern Lions for
giving me the opportunity to coach the club that
gave me so many great memories as a player. We
have had a solid pre season with good numbers and
now have an excellent mix of youth and experience
that will make us a very strong unit. The player
group is starting to realize that with hard work we
are not going to be just making up the numbers. I
would like to thank Mark Young ( Reserve Coach)
and my assistants (Stuart and both Brians) for the
input over the summer months. Now the real stuff
is here, as a club we have to make the most of it and
give it a red hot go. Tony Church - Coach
FERNTREE GULLY
The eagles have landed...today starts a new and
exciting era in the history of the club. While we
endeavour to preserve the history of the club, we
also look forward to the benefits of having juniors
at the club again. Special thanks to all at Knox
Eagles as well as a special thanks to Graeme Ryan
& R.T.Abley real estate for making our new strip
possible. Good luck to our coaches, Sidey,B.a &
Mick Caferkey. Welcome to all past players,
sponsors & supporters. Hope to see you upstairs at
half time of the seniors. Players membership now
due.$200 club member-see snowy. Past player
membership $50-see J.T or Billy. Club shirts see
Browney.(thanks to Fred Fisher). Go Gully.
FOREST HILL
The Executive and General Committee would like
to extend a warm welcome to all new players at the
Club this year, their partners, family and friends. A
special thanks to all our sponsors whose
commitment to the football club ensures its
ongoing viability. We look forward to a period of
continued improvement both on and off field and
are confident we will build on an excellent
foundation established in 2004. Congratulations on
the re-appointment of Russell Warburton as Senior
captain and to Greg Stack who will lead the
Reserves. The appeal for volunteers continues,
many hands make light work. Our commiserations
to the Pagey family on the sudden passing of Neil.
Sadly missed. Don't forget the "Start of Season
Bash" on the night of Round 1 at the rooms. Go
Zebs!
KILSYTH
We welcome the new season with high hopes for a
successful year and we welcome new and returning
players to Cougar ranks. 2004 was a good year with
all teams playing in the finals and we are looking to
build on this and take the next step this year. Sadly,
we are saying goodbye to a number of players who
are hanging up their boots after years of great
service to Kilsyth. Notable retirees include Dean
Buckley, Glen Bourke, Evan Kneebone, Clint
Martin, and Dave Smith. Thanks fellas for your
contribution to the club and to football generally.
We all wish you well for the future. More sadly we
say goodbye to one of our staunchest supporters
who lost his battle with cancer in the last week of
March. Arnold Andersen loved the Cougars and
took great joy in attending our home games to
cheer on the team. Arnold was one of nature's
gentlemen and we will greatly miss him. Our Colts
have joined with Heathmont for the season and we

wish them well for a successful year. Most of their
games will be played with us so supporters make
sure you get to the ground early and support the
kids. There is a growing feeling of confidence that
we will have a good year this year and we now
need to lift the intensity and start the year off on the
right foot with the first of many wins. Go boys,
make season 2005 one to remember.
SURREY PARK
There have been changes aplenty at Surrey Park
over the summer, with the club welcoming news
senior coach Adam Rossoukas, reserves coach
Vinnie Piccoli, and women's coach Nicole Mussett.
In addition, we welcome a number of new players,
many of whom have slotted straight into the senior
side. Club leaders for 2005 are captain Michael
Henningsen, vice captains Rob Stilling and Jim
Wright. The Panthers completed a solid pre-season
program, marked by wins in their last two practice
matches, against Canterbury and Kew. For the first
time in a few years, the club is well equipped for a
full-scale assault on the Division Four finals. On
the field we have good playing stocks and a
committed, hungry coaching staff. Off the field, the
committee has been working hard to instil a
professional, winning approach to all club matters.
We begin our challenge today with a grudge match
against our old rivals Whitehorse and it is
imperative that both seniors and reserves begin the
season in positive fashion. Let's go Panthers.
THE BASIN
everyone rally round Razor and the other coaches
and lets have more success for the Basin. Big
and Any Fork for their sponsorship of the
a big year for THE BASIN. GO BEARS!!
WAVERLEY BLUES
Waverley Blues welcomes the 2005 Season
following a disappointing 2004 which was
efforts over the past few seasons. today we
EASTERN RANGES
Eastern Ranges Vs Western Jets
After a grueling pre-season and months of
hard work Eastern intended on being up
there with the best in 2005. With a modified
game plan from 2004 and a new group of
players coming through Eastern got off to a
good start in round one, defeating the Western Jets by 33
points at Burbank Oval in gale force conditions. The wind
meant scoring was very difficult to the grandstand end.
Although the Western Jets got off to an early lead kicking 4
goals in the first quarter with the wind, Eastern weren’t far
behind finishing the quarter just trailing 4.4 to 3.1.
Zac Kelly (Healesville) who along with Heath Hocking
(East Ringwood) and Dominic DiMascio (Upper Ferntree
Gully) are the Ranges on – field leadership group to start the
season stood up early running riot in the midfield. Zac lead
the team for this week.
Brad Kelleher (Boronia) was solid up forward. The Ranges
were dominating in the midfield which was making it easy
for the centre players to feed the ball to into Easterns
forward fifty. The Ranges with the wind had much more of
the ball in the second term, going into half time leading 4.6
to 7.5.
After half time the Ranges fought hard into the gale, but the
Jets kicked 6 goals to Easterns 1 point. At this stage Eastern
although only a couple of goals down knew they would have
to work hard to capture the lead and secure the game. The
scoreboard after the third quarter read 10.9 to 7.6 to the Jets
advantage.
EASTERN RANGES MAJOR SPONSOR
The last quarter was all Easterns game,
they took control early and managed to
snatch the lead and get a first round win
under their belt. Tom Pollett (Tally Ho)
worked well in the backline in helping to
keep the jets scoreless in the final term.
Key players Zac Kelly (Healesville) and Brad Kelleher
(Boronia) worked well together up forward kicking 5 goals
between them. Jack Besley (Emerald), Daniel Hayes
(Montrose), Marcus Hottes (Yarra Junction) and Leigh
Adams (Woori Yallock) were all multiple goal kickers and
helped towards their 8 goal last quarter. Nicholas Liddle
(Mitcham) had a day out on the field dominating a lot of the
play for the Ranges.
A great new group of players along with a terrific new game
plan saw the Ranges start the season well. Good Luck Next
week Boys!!
