The Future of the HospiceBy Dr Ron McKeran, ChairmanThe Hospice has received many worried phone calls, questions and concernsraised by patients, families, supporters and staff of St Raphael’s who have readreports about the future of both St Anthony’s Hospital and St Raphael’s Hospice. So I want to start this Newsletter by explaining what is happening and to assureyou that the declared position of the Charity’s Trustees is that St Raphael’sHospice will continue as a Hospice.Dr Ron McKeran, ChairmanThe Trustees of the Charity, The Congregation of the Daughters of the Cross, which originally started St Anthony’s Hospital in 1904 and then opened StRaphael’s Hospice in 1987 are the legal owners of both the hospital and thehospice. The Trustees of the Charity are six of the Sisters (nuns) and theiraverage age is now 80. They have said, very understandably, that they cannot goon forever and want to assure the future for both the hospital and the hospice. The Daughters of the Cross Trustees have decided that they wish to sell St Anthony’s Hospital and are in the process ofpreparing to do that. We do not yet know a likely new owner, but I have to say that that there are great concerns becauseof the fact that St Anthony’s is one of very few hospitals left with a Catholic/Christian ethos. The Management Teamsof both the hospital and hospice, and the two Advisory Boards have all put forward an alternative proposal that a newCatholic/Christian based charity be formed, encompassing both St Anthony’s and St Raphaels together on the same site, withnew Trustees to take over the responsibilities of the existing Trustees. This would have the huge advantage that the supportwhich St Anthony’s Hospital currently gives to the hospice would continue. It is this latter point that has caused the concerns to which I referred at the beginning. Because the hospital and hospice arecurrently part of the same charity, the hospital gives an “invisible” subsidy to the hospice each year of about £1million. Thisrepresents the cost of all the “back room” and admin support services, things like catering, IT, personnel, payroll, site services,to name but a few. All are essential, but the hospital has provided these to the hospice over the years mainly free of anycharges. If the hospital is sold to a commercial concern, the question arises how long those services would continue to beavailable. Without them, the hospice would find itself in a situation where it would need to raise another £1million a year. The Daughters of the Cross Trustees have made it clear that St Raphael’s Hospice will stay under their ownership andresponsibility, for the time being. While this is very welcome reassurance, there remains considerable uncertainty in thelonger term. I hope that you will all continue to support the hospice through this difficult time and in particular support ourproposal for a joint new combined charity for St Anthony’s and St Raphael’s to ensure that both keep their unique ethos, and continue to operate as at present, but with new Trustees.Dr Ron McKeranChairman, St Raphael’s Hospice2

St Raphael’s Hospice NewsNEW PLANS AFOOT FORORANGERY EXTENSION!St Raphael’s have been awarded a grant from The Departmentof Health (DoH) for £510,000 towards the building of a newextension called “The Orangery”. St Raphael’s was one of 176organisations given a grant to support a wide variety of projects. The Orangery will be a large area joining from the Day Carebuilding. It will provide a café and facilities for patients and theirvisitors. There will be a bedroom for relatives to use for overnightstays whilst their family members are staying at the Hospice.Although the grant was not the full amount the hospice 7asked for,St Raphael’s can now make plans for this new extension to thehospice. The full cost of the new extension will be £920,000. Thebalance will be raised from other sources, including an appeal toCharitable Trusts and Foundations. The DoH grant is the third capital grant programme providedby the Department of Health and administered by Help theHospices, the leading charity supporting hospice care throughoutthe UK. St Raphael’s has received two previous grants, oneof £500,000 in 2010 for the replacement and upgrading ofall patient bathrooms in the hospice, the renewal of nursework stations outside each room and refurbishment of theSt Raphael’s Hospice proposed Orangery extensionhospice mortuary, following a grant of £222,000 in 2007 for therefurbishment of the hospice building, plus carpets and curtains.Welcoming the announcement, Dr Ron McKeran, Chairman of St Raphael’s Hospice said: “We are absolutely delighted to havebeen awarded this grant, which will help us to better support people from across the Boroughs of Sutton and Merton with life-limitingterminal illness, as well as their friends and families.” The new Orangery still needs some funds but we are confident that it can beachieved, and it will be of real benefit to patients and their families”.It helps to underline the long term future for the hospice with support from both the Government and our local community.Hospices are reliant on voluntary donations to run their vital services. The majority of this care is provided in peoples’ ownhomes, but people can also access day care, in-patient care and outpatient services. Each year, St Raphael’s needs to raise over £4 million to run all of its services, helping over 1,000 patients in the Sutton & Mertonboroughs. Three quarters of this cost (£3 million) each year needs to be raised by charity fundraising, donations, regular giving, lottery and legacies.Palliative Care conference L to R: Dr Muhayman Jamil,Father David Camilleri, Dr Mary Clarke, Dr Marie Joseph(Medical Director St Raphael’s) and Dr Frank SaranPALLIATIVE CARECONFERENCELast October, a 2 day conference was arranged by theHospice, to mark and celebrate the 25th Anniversary of theopening of St Raphael’s Hospice.
