Section 11: Assembling and Mountingthe Wheel PantsCONTINUEDStep 9. The wheel pant can be trial fitted to the landinggear/axle. You may find you will have to open up the large axlehole a bit with a round file due to epoxy seeping into theopening. Adjust the wheel pant in reference to the bottom of thefuselage so the bottom of the wheel pant is parallel to the bottomof the fuselage. When you are satisfied with the alignment, markthe small hole opening onto the wheel pant. This mark can bemade by passing a small drill bit through the hole and markingthe surface of the wheel pant. Remove the wheel pant and drill a3/32” hole in the wheel pant as marked.Step 6. Use a 1/4” drill bit and a 1/8” drill bit to drill out theholes in the plywood squares for the axle and 4-40 bolt. Usecaution that you do not split the wood.Step 10. Repeat Step 9 for the other wheel pant.Step 11. Epoxy a 4-40 blind nut into the small hole drilled in thewheel pant /plywood brace inside the wheel pant. Allow the epoxyto cure completely before attempting to tighten the bolt down.Step 12. Mount the wheel pant to the axle and screw in the4-40 bolt into the small hole above the axle, so that it screwsinto the blind nut. Before tightening the 4-40 bolt, slide on awheel collar, the wheel, and another wheel collar onto the axle.Step 13. Tighten down the 4-40 bolt to secure the wheel pant tothe landing gear. Position the wheel in the center of the wheelpant opening, and retain it there by positioning the two wheelcollars (on either side of the wheel) so that the wheel is kept inthe center of the wheel pant opening. Tighten both wheel collarscrews snugly once the wheel is properly positioned.Step 7. Mix approximately 1 ounce of 30-minute epoxy. Epoxyboth plywood pieces to the inside of each wheel pant, makingsure the epoxy does not clog the openings in the wheel pant thatwere drilled. The smaller hole will have to be drilled out later.Note: A drop of Locktite ® Z-42 on the wheel collar screwswill help keep them from coming lose duringoperation. Repeat the process for the other wheel.Step 8. Locate the axle, lock nut, wheel, and two wheel collars.Mount both axles to the landing gear using the large lock nuts.Once mounted, you will have to trim each axle using a Moto-tooland a cut-off wheel. Use caution when cutting the axles and wearprotective goggles.28
