When Ibump into people, they ask: ‘Areyou working yet?’ It had almostbecome a joke. Now it’s great tosay, ‘Yeah, I am actually, and Ilove it.’”As he approached his 50thbirthday, he had sent offthousands of job applications butnever had any luck, and fearedthat his lack of experience andqualifications were holding himback, especially in a city where20,000 people claim Job SeekersAllowance and an estimated sixpeople all apply for the same job.He said: “I worked for a bit afterI left school but there wasn’tmuch around. The last time Iworked I was about 25. I havebeen desperate to work. I keptthinking, surely someone willgive me a job soon – or even aninterview. I wondered what I wasdoing wrong, nobody even gotback to say thanks, but no thanks.“I was so bored and hatedhaving no money. Each week Ihad to save a few pounds just totake my kids out for a treat or buypresents.”Team in plea fornew sponsorsA TEAM of young footballers are appealingto businesses and residents in Bootle to helpthem find a sponsor.The local team of boys under 18s arecalled Belfry FC and are managed by AlanMcKeown.Alan said: “The boys have been playingfootball together for three to four years,they started as under 14’s. This promptedhim to call up regarding agardening job.He said: “The woman on thephone mentioned she didn’t haveany jobs available but knew ofanother job involving picking updog dirt with a machine – andwould I mind?“I replied, certainly not, it’s ajob that needs doing.”He was one of 11 peopleinterviewed for the post, createdby local residents’ group B2 Uand funded by Community First –and he was stunned when he wasselected.He said: “I was with mydaughter and new granddaughterwhen they rang two hours later toask when I could start. She explained that she had beenat Jolly’s public house on Marsh Lane,Bootle, about two or three weekspreviously, and when leaving theestablishment saw someone drop the packeton the ground. She tried to get theirattention but failed, and kept the packet inher bag.Ms Daulby, who has nine grandchildren,and three great grandchildren, and noprevious convictions was tested for drugsand proved negative.Her solicitor said that she would havereceived a caution for the offence but thather admission to the facts did not go farenough. He asked for the court to adjourn inorder that she might still receive a caution.Lynne Ingman, prosecuting said: “It’salways very difficult to criminalise someoneat this later stage of their life. But essentiallythere was lacking a full admission, which isthe criteria for a caution or a conditionalcaution.”However she said that it was “in the publicinterest” that a caution be sought.The magistrates agreed to adjourn the caseuntil June 27, saying that they were “goingto see if they can come up with a caution. Itwill be the end of the matter, on the basisthat she makes a full admission.”Woman, 32, stolebeauty productsA WALTON woman has been prosecuted forstealing beauty products from BootleStrand’s B&M.Leanne Mooney, 32, of Lauriston Road,appeared at Sefton Magistrates on June 7and pleaded guilty to theft from a shop.Prosecutor Lynne Ingman told the courtthat Mooney intended to sell the goods on inorder to feed her drug habit.“She has numerous convictions, she said,for shoplifting offences and assaults.
