Do they risk a lawsuitand publish an incriminating photo of amarried children’s TV presenter, lyingtopless on the grass with her toy boy lover(allegedly) beside her.The three men not only have differentviews but agendas of their own.Mike Stowell is outstanding as Howard, the‘revise editor’, an old–school editor, nowreduced to correcting grammatical errors inthe copy and dispensing gems of wisdombetween sips of Beaujolais.Alastair Hewitt makes a forceful Lister, aseasoned hack from a Scottish working classbackground, who is determined to get hisscoop on the front page at all costs. Lister isat odds with Bas, the young deputy nighteditor, fast tracked from University, whodoubts the photo’s authenticity and isfrightened to publish in case ofTHEATRESrepercussions.Into this triangle steps the referee, libelbarrister, Abegail, the epitome of aglamorous and supremely confidentmodern young woman, convincingly playedby Laura Ellis. She is the one who has toweigh up the odds if litigation ensues. After a slow start, when the charactersspend most of the time getting digs in at oneanother, the pace hots up in the second half.So many issues are involved. Do celebritiesdeserve privacy or are their indiscretions inthe public interest? Is the photo genuine?Who sent it and why? How far can the papergo without being sued? But there are personal issues as well. Bas,played with a depth of emotion by JohnDelahunty, used to go out with Abegail.Abegail is a friend of the girl in the photo.Lister has a chip on his shoulder aboutgraduate upstarts so is determined toovercome Bas’s protests.Full of acerbic put downs and one liners, happily lightened by Howard’s dry humour, the play takes on a relentless pace asdeadline hour looms and crunch timearrives.Director, Stephen Hughes–Alty, cleverlybrings all the strings together with a twist atthe end which, without being contrived, is atotal surprise and finishes the evening offvery satisfactorily..Star Rating: 7 out of 10. An absorbing play, well acted. The Waterloo and Crosby Theatre Company PresentsAffiliated to the NationalOperatic & DramaticAssociationFUNCTION SUITESPhotos available now atchampnews.com/pixonlineFREE1119794FUNCTION ROOMAVAILABLE ATThe Banjo— All Occasions —Tel: 07545 064176DISCOUNTEDRATE FORFRIDAY HIREFunction RoomFOR HIREBirthdays • Weddings • AnniversariesFunerals • Special Events etc• Catering Available• Large Car Park• Fully Licensed Bar• Wheelchair Access• Available to Non-Members1119934FREE FUNCTION ROOMAvailable for private parties and celebrationsNEWMEMBERSALWAYSWELCOMESpecial DiscountsavailableTel 01695 422688or 07907 465 512for detailsGRANDSTAND BAR@ SOUTHPORT FOOTBALL CLUBFor details call 01704 533422 or 07976 555782SPORTS BAR OPEN ALL WEEKEVENTS - OUT & ABOUTSouthport Spiritualist Church27a Hawkshead Street • Southportinvites you to a Special Evening ofClairvoyanceon Wednesday 19th Juneat 7.30pm-9.00pmwith excellent mediumDavid Taylorfrom BoltonFor further information telephone07761 444812 or 07563 938381£5 Non-members. £4 Members.
