Continents to Countries. Understanding differentcultures in the classroom. The purpose of this lesson plan is to have the students know thelocation, name, and 2 facts about each continent. The students should also know thecountries inside the continents where students in the class are from.Topic: The topic is understanding the layout of the world and what it is made up of. Thefirst graders will learn the location and names of all of the continents and learn a few (1-2) facts about each continent. They then will learn about countries. The countries ofinterest will be ones that are of the family background of the students in the class. Theidea that we are trying to get across is that the world is made up of many different partsand we are all linked to them because of our past.Goals: I would like my students to understand how big and complex the world is. I wouldalso like them to gain knowledge about their peers by looking into their familybackgrounds.Objectives: The skill acquired will be naming all of the continents and some countries inthe world. They should then be able to name up to at least 1-2 facts about each..• My students will be able to name the 7 continents of the world• My students will be able to identify the countries of the students in the class andwhat continent they are on.• My students will be able to name 1-2 facts about each continent and country.


• My students will be able to show the location of each continent and country on amap.Technology, materials and aids: I will use a computer for this lesson. I will need tobring my personal laptop, since my classroom is not equipped with a working computer. Iwill also need the mini projector, provided by my teacher, and a white board (in the class)to show my website. The website will be interactive because I will allow the children tofind each of the continents and countries by pointing on the board and using the mouse onthe computer choose the country they chose. The lesson will be a supplement to apresentation that is done by the student teacher in the class, Ms. Smith. Her lesson is aninteractive lesson with a quiz. The quiz is a survey that is answered by using clickers thatare connected to the board. My lesson will help to cement the ideas that Ms. Smith istrying to convey to the children.Procedures/methods:a. Overview: First the students will go through their lesson with Ms. Smith. Thislesson will recap everything that they have learned about continents andcountries. After they have gone through the lesson, I will show them thewebsite. On the website they will learn facts about the continents andcountries that they have learned already and then some new ones. AfterwardsTo assess their learning I will give the students a survey style quiz that isembedded on the website.b. Introduction: The lesson will begin with Ms. Smith’s lesson andpresentation. I will then take over and show the children how to get onto thewebsite. I will then teach the children how to use the website.c. Activities:• The students will sit in their assigned seats.• I will log onto the website while explaining how to get thereo How to log onto the interneto Where to type in the websiteo Explain what a URL iso Explain that the internet is everywhere there is a computer so theycan access the website on any computer.• I will then start explaining the website to the children• I will ask the students which continent they will want to learn about first• I will click on the one that one student(of my choosing) chooses• I will then read them the facts about the continent that are on the webpage• I will then ask if anyone is from the continent and what country they arefrom.• The students that are from that continent will be chosen to click on theircountry• When they click on it and new webpage will come up that has a picture oftheir country and facts about it that I will read it to them• After all of the countries have been looked at I will go back to the homescreen and start again with a new continent


d. Follow-up: This lesson plan correlates with the one that Ms. Smith is doing.She is using a survey quiz at the end of her lesson so we will be able to see ifthe students have understood what they have learned.Technology Frameworks:1.7 Explain that computers can store and organize information so that it can besearched.1.9 Explain that the Internet links computers around the world, allowing people toaccess information and communicate.3.1 Use various age-appropriate technologies to locate, collect, and organizeinformation.Assessment PlanMy lesson is directed toward a first grade class therefore it is based on basicconcepts and facts given in the website. I have asked them to become familiar with theseven continents and countries that students are from. I want them to understand thediversity in the classroom. Each of the continents have information on them as well aseach of the countries. My goal is for the students to retain two-three facts about eachplace. These basic facts will be included on the quiz.The facts that will be most focuses on are:• The location of the countries where students are from• What students are from what countries• The weather in countries• The money used in the countriesTo make sure that the students have retained some of these facts I will use the quiz page.Quiz1. 9. D10. DIn order for the students to get the correct answer I would expect them to look over eachweb page multiple times. I would also make the students be “experts” on their owncountries and tell the class a new fact about them weekly. Those facts than would berecapped at the end of the week.
