On the one hand, it isa short IELTS preparation course for use in theclassroom with intermediate to upper-intermediatelevel students requiring a Band 5 to Band 6 in theTest. On the other hand, it could also be used bymore advanced level students requiring fastfamiliarisation with the exam, as it covers all partsof the exam and presents authentic exam-leveltasks. It is also just as useful for students studyingon their own, who want to increase their languagecompetence and IELTS test-taking strategies. If you are studying alone we strongly recommendthat you try and find a study partner with whomyou can practise the Speaking material and someof the other partner activities, marked with thesymbol in the book.In addition to the core text, there is also aPersonal Study Book, which providessupplementary exercises for extra class practice orhomework. Together these form a comprehensivecourse, designed to lead you from a pre-IELTSlevel up to the realistic level of the Test. How will Step Up to IELTS help me preparefor the Test?Step Up to IELTS is highly focused on the IELTSTest – every activity is relevant to the Test anddesigned to help you with a specific aspect of thetest. We recommend that you work your waysystematically through the book to make the mostof its progressive structure. If you want to varythis, however, you will find a comprehensive Mapof the Book outlining the content of each unit, toallow you to select material as required. An overview of the IELTS Test is given on page 141.Special features of Step Up to IELTS are:• The 16 units cover a range of topics thatcommonly occur in the IELTS Test so that youcan build vocabulary and ideas related to these. The Useful words and Useful expressions boxesthat appear throughout also help you with this.• Practice is given in the range of IELTSquestion types and tasks that can be found ineach of the modules: Listening, Reading,Writing, Speaking.• General Training Reading and Writingmodules are covered in addition to theAcademic modules.•A unique feature of the book is the Step Upactivity in each unit, which gives you a step-bystepapproach to IELTS question-types andtasks in each section of each module of theTest. These build test skills gradually, withshorter, lower level achievable test-type tasksfor practice, leading to more challenging tasksat the authentic test level.• Language check pages revise useful points ofgrammar. Grammar boxes throughout the bookalso focus on key language points.• Reading pages encourage you to analyse thetexts and understand the skills that are beingtested and this will help you approach thequestions in the Test more effectively. All thetask types covered in the book relate to boththe Academic and General Training modules.• Listening and Writing pages build yourcompetence in the specific skills required inthese areas.• Speaking pages cover all aspects of theinterview, with ideas on how to approach theexaminer’s questions.•You will find numerous Test tips on how toavoid losing marks through inaccuracies orfailing to answer the questions correctly. TheTest tips also offer advice on how to maximiseyour band score.• The Test practice sections at the end of eachunit are authentic IELTS-type test papers. They can be used to form a complete sampletest.• The Personal Study Book provides extravocabulary, grammar and writing practice andmakes an ideal supplementary text.• The With Answers edition of the Student’sBook includes a full key to all questions, including the IELTS Test Practice at the endof each unit, and there is a recording script forthe listening sections, with the answersunderlined. Sample Band 9 answers areprovided for the WritingTasks, as models of howto tackle thesequestions, but wewould emphasisethat these are onlysamples, and manyother answerswould be possible.✓ RememberWhen you enrol, you must decidewhether to sit the Academic or theGeneral Training version of thetest.
