May 2009In memory of Riki ConwayRiki was involved in Books in Homessince its inception and watched itgrow from small seeds to what it hasbecome today.A long-time friend of Christine Fernyhough’s,Riki was immediately fascinated with Booksin Homes and was delighted to join theprogramme officially in 1998. Like all of usat that time, she was amazed at how fastword spread about the new ‘Duffy Books’initiative and at how many schools andsponsors came on board in such a shortspace of time. Everyone admired Christine’sincredible passion, enthusiasm and drive. When Riki started there were around 55schools on the programme and when sheleft in 2006 there were close to 500. Shewas incredibly proud of Books in Homes. As the programme grew and the schoolsneeded visits to ensure the programme wasrunning smoothly, Riki began her dream jobas the travelling rep visiting all Duffy schoolsfrom Te Hapua to Bluff over the course of theyear. She travelled extensively throughoutNew Zealand and inspired many of us in theold team to visit particular places becauseof her recommendations; Waihau Bay,Rangiputa Beach, Nugget Point, Spirits Bayto name a few. She met many principals, coordinators and Duffy kids and wrote soeloquently of their challenges, heartachesand achievements. She marvelled at whatsome had to endure in the remotest parts ofthe country and admired their commitment.Rix, we remember you so very fondly, yourface as you watched the kids receive theirDuffy books atassembly time, yourchild-like giggle, your frustration asyou tried to get yourcomputer to work, your strength as youbattled through yourpain and still managed to carry on working. You gave your all. Thanks for the wonderfulmemories Rix. You will be missed in the farcorners and everywhere in between of thisbeautiful country that you so loved. Rest inpeace Rix,Me te mātou aroha nui atuJacqui Whyte and your Duffy team matespast and present
