PULP AND PAPER BASKETS ®Quality and Service WorkingTogetherPULP AND PAPER

PULP AND PAPERSCREENSScreen rooms in many mechanical pulpand paper mills are being rejuvenatedtoday as a result of Johnson Screenssignificant breakthrough in screeningtechnology with the fine-slottedVee-Wire ® (wedge-wire) basket. This technology can yield significantlyimproved shive removal, enhancephysical pulp properties, and, in somecases, reduce electrical power. The design of the Vee-Wire basketproduces a continuous slot over thelength of the basket. Vertical, parallelrods or “wires” are arranged in a circleto form a cylindrical shape. The wiresare held mechanically in place withmetal bands or rings. The size ofthe gap or slot between the wires isprecisely set. Typical values are0.004 in., 0.006 in. and 0.008 in.(0.10 mm, 0.15 mm, and 0.20 mm).The angle of the wedge and theamount that the wedge protrudesinto the stock (i.e., the profile) effectsscreen performance.By comparison, conventional slottedbaskets are built from rolled sheet metal.Parallel slots, each several inches long, are cut into the sheet metal, leavingland areas between each slot to providemechanical strength to the basket. The Vee-Wire basket, by virtue of thecontinuous slot and slender wires, hassignificantly less land area. This resultsin approximately twice the open area asthe conventional basket for the sameslot width. For any given screen, this advantageyields the following benefits:• Lower passing velocity for a givenproduction rate and slot width.• Higher production rate for a given slotwidth and passing velocity.• Finer slots for a given production rateand passing velocity.02

OUR GENERATION 3FROM EXPERTISE ANDINSPECTION, TO INSTALLATIONAND MAINTENANCE.The Generation 3 is constructed primarilyfor pulp and paper applications.Wires are mounted directly on notchedsupport rings and robotically TIG weldedin place. This dramatically increases thestress resistance of the screen comparedto classic resistance welded screens.Notched support rings give theGeneration 3 construction an exceptionalreliability and reproducibility of all criticalparameters (slot, relief angle). There are several steps to manufacturinga classic resistance welded wedge-wirescreen: wrapping, splitting, re-rolling,welding and then adding reinforcing rings. The Generation 3 construction reducessignificantly the number of necessarymanufacturing steps: The support ringsare notched, the wires are mounted inthese notches and then robotically TIGwelded in place. We can help you select the optimaldesign for each of your processapplications. Our engineers have over20 years of experience in the pulp andpaper industry.Notchedsupport ringWireAutomaticTIG weldingModern equipment, Artistic abilities, Emphasison details. This is Johnson Screens passion.Every support ring is notched to hold the wire.03

CONTOURED WIRECYLINDERCONTOURED WIRE CYLINDERS HELP IMPROVE THESCREENING EFFICIENCY OF SCREENING SYSTEMS.Johnson Screens provides all modelsof inflow and outflow pressure screencylinders. We offer slot widths down to 0.004 in.(0.10 mm), wire width down to 0.079 in.(2.0 mm) for 12 spi, and multiple contourdepths are offered. And we offer pressure screens to suitmany different types of machines.OutflowInflowJohnson Screens has made extensiveresearch in cylinder designs and wirecontour design shapes. We focus onthe optimum designs and wire shapesto provide cylinders that run with allrotor designs and pulp variations.Because of the many installed wirecylinders, the facts show that it hasbecome the optimum cylinder tobe installed in any pulp and paperpressure-screen system.Surface wear is a common cause offailure of milled and wire cylinders. It is important to protect the surfacefrom wear due to the high levels ofdebris found during the screeningprocess. Johnson Screens uses aspecial chroming process to increasethe thickness of the protective chromelayer and ensure a high hardnessquality. Depending on the amountof debris, typically thicknesses are0.006 in., 0.012 in. and 0.018 in.(0.15 mm, 0.30 mm and 0.45 mm).The results are a well-protected surfaceand less frequent cylinder replacement.04

MILLED AND DRILLEDMILLED SLOTTED SCREEN CYLINDERContoured wire cylinders have replacedmany traditional milled slotted cylindersto make existing systems moreproductive and efficient; but JohnsonScreens can also provide a traditionalmilled slotted cylinder to replace anexisting milled cylinder, if required.DRILLED HOLE SCREEN CYLINDERNot all screening systems require fineslotted screens. In some cases, thefine screens must be protected firstby traditional drilled hole screens.Johnson Screens can provide bothsmooth plate and milled plate (contour)drilled hole cylinders. With the use ofmulti-axle drilling machines and thesame manufacturing process that isused to produce the slotted cylinders,we can provide high productivitydrilled hole cylinders. This flexibilityensures that you will receive thehighest quality drilled hole cylindersto meet your needs.05

EXTRACTION PLATESAND SCREW PRESSCYLINDERJOHNSON SCREENS CAN PROVIDE ALL VARIATIONSOF SCREW PRESS CYLINDERS AND EXTRACTIONPLATES FOR PULPERS, DETRASHERS, DEFLAKERSAND OTHER EQUIPMENT.Materials for extraction plates include304, 316, 410, and 420 SST, wearbars, chrome plating, heat treating ofmaterials and flippable plates can helpextend the life of your extraction plates. We also offer all styles of screw presscylinders. High-strength drilled hole andVee-Wire ® slotted designs are offeredfor increased open area, enhanced fiberretention and improved effluent clarity.06
