UNIT 3: HEALTH, SAFETY AND SECURITY IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARELinks to National Occupational Standards, other BTEC units, other BTECqualifications and other relevant units and qualificationsThe knowledge gained through this unit will underpin many other units in theprogramme. It will be further developed in particular in Unit 6: Personal andProfessional Development in Health and Social Care, Unit 12: Public Health andUnit 39: Infection Prevention and Control. This core unit should enable learners togain some of the underpinning knowledge for the following units of the Level 3 NVQin Health and Social Care:• Unit HSC32: Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security inthe working environment• Unit HSC33: Reflect on and develop your practice• Unit HSC374: Provide first aid to an individual needing emergencyassistance.This unit should also enable learners to gain some of the underpinning knowledge forthe following units of the Level 3 NVQ in Health:• Unit CU6: Maintain communications and records within the organisation• Unit GEN3: Maintain health and safety in a clinical/therapeuticenvironment• Unit GEN12: Reflect on and evaluate your own values, priorities, interestsand effectiveness• Unit GEN13: Synthesise new knowledge into the development of your ownpractice• Unit CHS35: Provide first aid to an individual needing emergency assistance• Unit CHS36: Provide basic life support.Additionally, learners should gain some of the underpinning knowledge for thefollowing core dimensions of the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework:• Core dimension 2: Personal and people development — Develop oneself andcontribute to the development of others• Core dimension 3: Health, safety and security — Promote, monitor and maintainbest practice in health, safety and security.They should also gain some of the underpinning knowledge for the following Skills forCare/Northern Ireland Social Care Council Induction Standards:• Standard 1: Understand the principles of care• Standard 2: Understand the organisation and the role of the worker• Standard 3: Maintain safety at work• Standard 6: Develop as a worker.The unit also provides opportunities for the production of evidence towards theLevel 3 key skills in communication, information and communication technology,improving own learning and performance and working with others.Health and safety issues will be covered in some detail during the progressionthrough this unit, and environmental issues will also be introduced.64BN018467 – Specification – Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Nationals in Health and Social Care– Issue 1 – February 2007 © Edexcel Limited 2007
