UNIT 46: INDEPENDENT LEARNING IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CAREUnit 46:Independent Learning in Healthand Social CareNQF Level 3:Guided learning hours: 60BTEC NationalUnit abstractLearners are increasingly being encouraged to take responsibility for their ownlearning, this responsibility extending both to the choice of learning opportunitiesand to the methods of learning. The aim of this unit is to focus on learning choices,methods of learning and resources, with the intention of encouraging the learner towork independently, and also to be able to contribute effectively in a learningenvironment.In a classroom situation most of the learning will take place through the medium ofliteracy, therefore this unit considers the importance of written resources in thelearning process. Learners will consider the skills of reading and writing in thecontext of their health and social care studies, and then learn how to use resourceseffectively in order to gather information relevant to their studies. This will includelearning how to manipulate text and how to understand the formats in which text ispresented.Learners will gain understanding of how to plan study and therefore make effectiveuse of their time and resources. They will learn about the concept of work/lifebalance and the importance of planning time in order to allow for free time. Theywill also learn how to manage assignment work and deadlines, and prepare forexaminations.On completion of this unit learners should be able to manage their current learningindependently and effectively, and be able to plan for future learning.
