UNIT 45: COMPETENCE-BASED VOCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR HEALTH AND SOCIAL CAREFor P5, learners are required to reflect on their own development, thus again linkingwith Unit 6: Personal and Professional Development in Health and Social Care. Theyneed to consider their own effectiveness in work in health and social care, basing thison competences successfully assessed, workplace experiences and such items ofevidence as feedback from supervisors, witness testimonies and end of placementreports, as well as their own personal reflections and feelings. For M3 this needs tobe applied to a consideration of how improving one’s own personal effectiveness canenhance the experience of the patient/service user. Again, the extra work placementhours should provide opportunities to develop examples of this.D1 should be a significant piece of work, and requires learners to evaluate their owndevelopment as a result of their workplace experiences. They need to considerstrengths and weaknesses of their various experiences in terms of providingopportunities for development, including their skill development. They also need toconsider how such opportunities have enabled the learners themselves to develop.Reflection is required into the learner’s own ability to maximise on opportunities fordevelopment, and strengths and weaknesses in relation to this. Generation of ideasfor future development needs should also come out of this activity, and feed intopersonal development plans.Links to National Occupational Standards, other BTEC units, other BTECqualifications and other relevant units and qualificationsThere are strong links with Unit 6: Personal and Professional Development in Healthand Social Care, and also the optional Unit 17: Working in the Social Care Sector,Unit 18: Working in the Health Sector, Unit 46: Independent Learning in Health andSocial Care, and Unit 47: Academic Literacy in the Health and Social Care Sectors.The practical nature of this unit is such that the knowledge and skills gained throughit will be further developed in all other units in the qualification.
