UNIT 37: DEFENCE AGAINST DISEASED1 then requires learners to take a more holistic view again and evaluate the relativeroles of the non-specific and specific defensive responses. The use of examples willhelp to support this evaluation.For P5, learners should explain both active and passive artificially acquired immunity,using two examples for each to aid their explanations.For P6, learners will have carried out research into vaccination programmes duringthe delivery period, and they are required to present the outcomes of such researchindividually for the purposes of assessment. They should choose a vaccinationprogramme, possibly a programme that is currently topical, a national programme,such as for influenza, or an international programme, such as for poliomyelitis. Somelearners may choose to take a more historical approach, and choose the smallpoxeradication programme, for example. For M3, learners need to explain the potentialrole of the vaccination programme in public health.There are strong links here with Unit 12: Public Health, and learners need to considerthe role of the chosen vaccination programme in terms of its specific protectionfunction. This can be considered locally, regionally, nationally or internationally, asappropriate for the chosen programme.
