UNIT 29: APPLIED PSYCHOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES FOR HEALTH AND SOCIAL CAREUnit 29:Applied PsychologicalPerspectives for Health andSocial CareNQF Level 3:Guided learning hours: 60BTEC NationalUnit abstractThe aim of this unit is to extend learners’ knowledge and understanding of theprincipal psychological perspectives and their application to the health and socialcare sectors. This was initially gained through study of Unit 8: PsychologicalPerspectives for Health and Social Care.Learners will examine the principal psychological perspectives in more detail than inUnit 8: Psychological Perspectives for Health and Social Care. They will extend theirknowledge, for example, of different theorists, and then apply these to the healthand social care sectors in order to gain a more in-depth understanding of thepotential value of psychology in these sectors. They will explore the contribution ofpsychological perspectives to the understanding of the development of individuals,including the development of behaviour. The role of attachment in behaviouracquisition will also be examined, including some of the research that has beenconducted to explore this.Learners will also gain understanding of specific behaviours such as might beencountered in health and social care settings, and the contribution of psychologicalperspectives to the management and treatment of these. Finally, learners willexplore residential care provision and the contribution of psychological perspectivesto such provision.On successful completion of this unit learners will have a very good understanding ofthe application of the psychological approach to health and social care. The unit willbe valuable to those learners intending to work with people in a caring capacity. Itwill also be useful to learners who intend to progress to study at a higher level.
