UNIT 10: CARING FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLEFor M1, learners need to examine in detail the role of policies and procedures inhelping children/young people and their families whilst the child or young person isbeing looked after. This could include, for example, consideration of the assessmentof needs, the support given, and consideration of issues such as continuity ofeducation and health care needs.D1 requires an evaluation of the legislative rights of the child/young person and therights of their families. Learners need to bear in mind that the needs of thechild/young person are paramount when considering the issues here, and considerthe relative rights as afforded by the relevant legislation, and any potential conflicts.Case studies could be useful vehicles for assessment, especially for the secondassignment. For P6, learners need to only identify — or briefly describe — thestrategies and methods of supporting children, young people and their families whereabuse is suspected or confirmed. This should include both short-term support, andlonger-term actions to assist the alleviation of symptoms.For M3 these need to be explained, with more detail — for example giving reasonswhy the methods used may help support the child, young person, or their families.For D2 a range of strategies and methods to support children/young people and theirfamilies need to be evaluated, with a consideration of strengths and weaknesses interms of potential effectiveness.
