UNIT 10: CARING FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLEUnit 10:Car<strong>in</strong>g for Children <strong>and</strong> YoungPeopleNQF <strong>Level</strong> 3:Guided learn<strong>in</strong>g hours: 60<strong>BTEC</strong> NationalUnit abstractThe aim of this unit is to <strong>in</strong>troduce learners to the care of children <strong>and</strong> young people,aged from birth to 18 years old, who need to be looked after. It also provides an<strong>in</strong>troduction to the sensitive issue of the risks of abuse to children <strong>and</strong> young people,the strategies that can m<strong>in</strong>imise the risk of such abuse occurr<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> how to h<strong>and</strong>lesituations of suspected abuse.Learners will <strong>in</strong>itially explore potential reasons for children <strong>and</strong> young peopleneed<strong>in</strong>g to be looked after, the different types of care available, <strong>and</strong> a variety ofrelevant organisations. They will then exam<strong>in</strong>e the risks to children <strong>and</strong> young peopleof abusive <strong>and</strong> exploitative behaviour, <strong>and</strong> the strategies to m<strong>in</strong>imise risks.The unit has been developed with reference to the NVQ <strong>in</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Care</strong> at<strong>Level</strong> 3, <strong>and</strong> provides the underp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g knowledge for the National OccupationalSt<strong>and</strong>ards Unit HSC34: Promote the wellbe<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> protection of children <strong>and</strong> youngpeople.
