UNIT 9: VALUES AND PLANNING IN SOCIAL CAREEssential guidance for tutorsDeliveryIt is recommended that the tutor responsible for delivering this unit is a current orrecent social care practitioner. The use of guest speakers or visits to social caresettings would enhance the study of the unit, as would simulated care planningactivities and/or case studies. If these case studies are adapted from real-lifesituations care should be taken to ensure that confidentiality is respected.The unit lends itself to a good deal of work involving discussion, either in smallgroups or involving the whole group. Legislation could be introduced through internetresearch, using a questionnaire to direct the learner. Learners will already have beenintroduced to legislation in a variety of contexts, and in this unit the focus isspecifically how it influences social care practice. Only the key points need to beunderstood.Tutor input or a guest speaker will be needed in order to introduce the care planningprocess, this being followed up by case studies or role play to develop learnerunderstanding.Learners should be encouraged to link their study of this unit to Unit 1: DevelopingEffective Communication in Health and Social Care, Unit 2: Equality, Diversity andRights in Health and Social Care and Unit 6: Personal and Professional Developmentin Health and Social Care.Values and ethics will have been introduced in other units, such as Unit 2: Equality,Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care, but this unit provides a vehicle formore in-depth consideration and discussion.AssessmentEvidence for this unit should not be purely theoretical but linked to real workactivities that involve planning care for service users. The assessment methodsdevised must ensure that learners have an understanding of the theory in relation topractice, and all of the issues relevant to efficient and effective care planning.Evidence for some of the criteria could come from work experience.Some of the assessment could be based on case study material, but if these are basedon real life situations then care should be taken to ensure that confidentiality isrespected.This unit could be assessed either by means of one large assignment, or by using twosmaller ones, the first based on care planning (P1, P2, P3, M1, M2, M3, D1, D2) andthe second based on ethics and values (P4, P5, M4).For the first assignment, learners should be encouraged to consider real life examplesfrom their experiences, with due consideration to confidentiality.
