THE NEW R&D LABORATORYThe new research and development laboratory covers anarea of 1,400 m 2 , located inside the industrial air-conditioningproduction facilities. The main tasks are the construction of the prototypes designedby the technical department, and the functionaltests in the DB and WB temperature conditions specifiedby Eurovent. The structure features a supervisors plus 4 techniciansworking on the construction of the prototypes andanother 4 laboratory technicians who perform the tests. The new laboratory is equipped with■ A compensated calorimeter (featuring a gap and twoseparate chambers) to test units with a capacity up toP=16.5 kW and the possibility of test the units downto a temperature of -10°C;■ A compensated calorimeter (with double chamberand no gap, in which the heat loss is considered) totest units with a capacity up to P=16.5 kW and downto a temperature of -10°C, fitted inside an enthalpytunnel for calculating the performance of the split indoorunits or fan coils up to Q=1,500 m 3 /h, built accordingto the AMCA 210 specifications■ A fan testing tunnel, built according to ISO 5801 andUNI 10531, to test the air flow-rate of axial-flow andtangential fans and study the flow-rate/pressure curvesof centrifugal fans for values up to Q=5000m 3 /h.■ A semi-anechoic chamber for testing sound powerand pressure and reconditioned to perform the temperaturetests specified by the Eurovent conditions.■ The chamber is used for units with a capacity up toP=50 kW and for the entire series of terminal unitsand chillers up to this capacity rating. A climate chamberfor testing units with a capacity up to P=185 kW,with the possibility of conducting tests down to a temperatureof -10°C. This chamber has been especiallydesigned for testing units with centrifugal fans androof-top units. All the chambers described allow the technicians to testcooling only or heat pump units, with heat recovery in thedesuperheating phase or total heat recovery, as well asunits for the production of chilled water down to T=-6°Cand process chillers. The investments made over recentyears into research and development have allowed thedevelopment of units that respond to the needs of themarket both in terms of performance (efficiency, low noise, reliability) and in terms of operating versatility in allclimate conditions and with various systems solutions. The most significant and prestigious investment is surelythe new climate chamber, one of the biggest in Italy, currentlybeing set up and able to test units with capacitiesup to P=900kW.The total inside volume, around 1200 m 3 , is managed bya system of air and water reconditioning circuits, with invertercontrol and an intelligent software system that allowsthe various tests to be performed without theoperator present, for temperatures down to T= -10°C.The chamber can be divided into two completely independentzones to test two units simultaneously. The steam is generated by a low pressure boiler especiallydesigned in the Industrial Heating Division technicaldepartment. The Ferroli S.p.A. technicians, whose work has always takensignificant account of energy savings and consequentlyheat recovery, have also designed a system whereby thethermal energy produced by the R&D laboratory is maintainedat constant values, using a loop circuit with evaporativetowers, and then reused for conditioning the testingenvironments at the end of the line.CALIBRATED/COMPENSATED CALORIMETERCLIMATE CHAMBERCLIMATE CHAMBER
