The focus of these tech seminars was how to navigatean IPad. CAP will continue these tech seminars at the respective Senior Centersevery other week. The seniors will participate in a ballroom dancing programprovided by the Yale University Ballroom Dance Team when they visitus on March 14 th . Eileen Palmer & Jason Lessard advise the CAP.Earlier this month, the amazing Ben Rutan won Algonquin's Poetry Out Loudfinals. More than 400 students entered this contest through their English classes.Ben will be moving on to the regional competition on Sunday March 3rdin Springfield. Seth Czarnecki, English Teacher, was the impresario of thisannual event.Algonquin Regional High School’s SADD chapter is pleased to host the “Driveto Save Lives” Tour for parents and students featuring Kathi and Chris Sullivanon Tuesday, March 26 at 7 pm. The parent presentation will include locallaw enforcement as well as the speakers and is designed to help parentsunderstand the issues their children are faced with and provide tools for bothstudents and parents to use to make safe choices. Parents and students of allgrades are welcome to attend.To help student make better decisions, SADD is sponsoring a video contestpromoting safe choices. Students can create public service announcementsshowing how reckless driving and/or decisions are dangerous while involvingmessages about peer pressure. The winners of the contest will be unveiled atthe parent night and presented with prizes including a free limousine for a nightalong with other cash prizes. Indoortrack had many stars, including Joe Breen’s 8th place finish in the State meet,the 7th place finish of the 4x200 relay (Stephen Roy, Shane Duffy, Davis andColin Kraft) setting a new school record of 1:33.03, and snagging an invitationto the New England championships. The girls 4x200 team (Serena Hooker, GabyDiGiovanni, Haley Hughes, and Brenna Stewart) have also been invited tothe New Englands.In wrestling, sectional placers included Alex Mazzola (1st), Christian Saccone(2nd), Joe Cozzolino (2nd), James Officer (3rd), Austin Roche (4th), NateMorrell (5th), David Wrin (6th), and Sam Schick (6th). The team placed 5thout of 12 teams in the event. In the state tournament, Mazzola (2nd), Cozzolino(6th), and Saccone (7th) did well.Junior ClassClass of 2014The first half of our Junior Year hasbeen great! Earlier in the year, wehosted the “Variety Show” - whichwas a huge success! And this year,it was truly a show of variety: singers,guitarists, karate, a juggler … itwas a fun and entertaining night.We also have many activitiesplanned for the final semester of theyear.DUES COLLECTION: Membersof Junior Steering Committee will becollecting our class dues during thefirst week of February, February 4-8.This year, class dues will be $25.The total for our three years is$90.00 ($35.00/freshman year;$30.00 sophomore year; and now$25/junior year). The dues must bepaid by check, made out to “ARHSClass of 2014.” A student must payall three years of dues in order toattend the Prom and other significantsenior events.THE PROM: The Junior Prom willbe held on Saturday, May 18th atUnion Station in Worcester. Thevenue is beautiful and the SteeringCommittee has been working busilyto plan a fun, safe and memorablenight.In April, the Junior Class is hostingthe Hypnotist Show again, starringhypnotist Dan Candell. This is thethird year we are hosting this fundraiserand we are very excited forthis year’s show and continue success.The Juniors are also in themidst of planning a service project inwhich every class member can participate… details to follow soon!We are looking forward to a greatrest of the year!
In swimming, the girls finished in 15th place out of 49 teams. Setting a new school record and finishing in 7th placewas the 200 freestyle relay team of Eleni Bautz, Claudia Capria, Mackenzie Hostage, and Carly Railing. The boysfinished in 23rd place out of 54 teams. In only its second year, Algonquinis one of only twelve schools in the state with a Unified Track Team.Funded through a grant by the Special Olympics of Massachusetts(SOMA) in conjunction with the Algonquin Athletic Dept togetherwith local businesses and private donations, Unified Track and Fieldis a varsity sport which includes individuals of all developmental abilities.Every Algonquin student has a chance to represent his or school,enjoy the camaraderie of being on a team, and challenge themselvesindividually to grow as an athlete and as a person.However, this is the last year of grant funding from Special Olympicsfor the ARHS school team.Last year over 25 students from Algonquin (together with WestboroughHigh School) practiced and competed against eight otherschools. The season culminated on May 19 th with a Unified TrackThe Algonquin Regional High School ScienceDepartment is seeking speakers fortheir Science Career Day on June 10,2013.
