Drama GuildTheatre Festival last Saturday at Leominster High. 18 Students participatedfrom Algonquin this year. Maura Morrison directsthe Festival Play.On February 4 th , the 15-40 Connection Club at Algonquinsponsored their second “Orange Out” <strong>of</strong> theyear. This was in observance <strong>of</strong> World Cancer Day,<strong>and</strong> the club invited three speakers to address thesophomore health classes throughout the day. KimHoney is the advisor for this club.On Tuesday, February 12, 5 National Art Honor Societystudents visited the <strong>Northborough</strong> Senior Centerto hang decorations that they <strong>and</strong> other students madethroughout January in their weekly meetings.Algonquin will be the host site for the New Engl<strong>and</strong>High School Gymnastics Championships on Saturday,<strong>March</strong> 9 th . Chloe <strong>and</strong> Alissa have also beennamed to the Massachusetts National Team. They will be traveling with theteam to Fort Myers Beach, Florida in May to compete in the Senior NationalHigh School Gymnastics Showcase. AmeIia Davis, coach <strong>of</strong> Algonquin, hasbeen elected to the Massachusetts Coaches’ Association Board, <strong>and</strong> will serveas a National Team coach at this year’s competition.Community Action Program - held a Senior Citizen Book discussion (students& seniors) <strong>and</strong> a technology Seminar at both the <strong>Northborough</strong> & <strong>Southborough</strong>Senior Centers. The focus <strong>of</strong> these tech seminars was how to navigatean IPad. CAP will continue these tech seminars at the respective Senior Centersevery other week. The seniors will participate in a ballroom dancing programprovided by the Yale University Ballroom Dance Team when they visitus on <strong>March</strong> 14 th . Eileen Palmer & Jason Lessard advise the CAP.Earlier this month, the amazing Ben Rutan won Algonquin's Poetry Out Loudfinals. More than 400 students entered this contest through their English classes.Ben will be moving on to the regional competition on Sunday <strong>March</strong> 3rdin Springfield. Seth Czarnecki, English Teacher, was the impresario <strong>of</strong> thisannual event.Algonquin Regional High School’s SADD chapter is pleased to host the “Driveto Save Lives” Tour for parents <strong>and</strong> students featuring Kathi <strong>and</strong> Chris Sullivanon Tuesday, <strong>March</strong> 26 at 7 pm. The parent presentation will include locallaw enforcement as well as the speakers <strong>and</strong> is designed to help parentsunderst<strong>and</strong> the issues their children are faced with <strong>and</strong> provide tools for bothstudents <strong>and</strong> parents to use to make safe choices. Parents <strong>and</strong> students <strong>of</strong> allgrades are welcome to attend.To help student make better decisions, SADD is sponsoring a video contestpromoting safe choices. Students can create public service announcementsshowing how reckless driving <strong>and</strong>/or decisions are dangerous while involvingmessages about peer pressure. The winners <strong>of</strong> the contest will be unveiled atthe parent night <strong>and</strong> presented with prizes including a free limousine for a nightalong with other cash prizes. Indoortrack had many stars, including Joe Breen’s 8th place finish in the State meet,the 7th place finish <strong>of</strong> the 4x200 relay (Stephen Roy, Shane Duffy, Davis <strong>and</strong>Colin Kraft) setting a new school record <strong>of</strong> 1:33.03, <strong>and</strong> snagging an invitationto the New Engl<strong>and</strong> championships. The girls 4x200 team (Serena Hooker, GabyDiGiovanni, Haley Hughes, <strong>and</strong> Brenna Stewart) have also been invited tothe New Engl<strong>and</strong>s.In wrestling, sectional placers included Alex Mazzola (1st), Christian Saccone(2nd), Joe Cozzolino (2nd), James Officer (3rd), Austin Roche (4th), NateMorrell (5th), David Wrin (6th), <strong>and</strong> Sam Schick (6th). The team placed 5thout <strong>of</strong> 12 teams in the event. In the state tournament, Mazzola (2nd), Cozzolino(6th), <strong>and</strong> Saccone (7th) did well.Junior ClassClass <strong>of</strong> 2014The first half <strong>of</strong> our Junior Year hasbeen great! Earlier in the year, wehosted the “Variety Show” - whichwas a huge success! And this year,it was truly a show <strong>of</strong> variety: singers,guitarists, karate, a juggler … itwas a fun <strong>and</strong> entertaining night.We also have many activitiesplanned for the final semester <strong>of</strong> theyear.DUES COLLECTION: Members<strong>of</strong> Junior Steering Committee will becollecting our class dues during thefirst week <strong>of</strong> February, February 4-8.This year, class dues will be $25.The total for our three years is$90.00 ($35.00/freshman year;$30.00 sophomore year; <strong>and</strong> now$25/junior year). The dues must bepaid by check, made out to “ARHSClass <strong>of</strong> 2014.” A student must payall three years <strong>of</strong> dues in order toattend the Prom <strong>and</strong> other significantsenior events.THE PROM: The Junior Prom willbe held on Saturday, May 18th atUnion Station in Worcester. Thevenue is beautiful <strong>and</strong> the SteeringCommittee has been working busilyto plan a fun, safe <strong>and</strong> memorablenight.In April, the Junior Class is hostingthe Hypnotist Show again, starringhypnotist Dan C<strong>and</strong>ell. This is thethird year we are hosting this fundraiser<strong>and</strong> we are very excited forthis year’s show <strong>and</strong> continue success.The Juniors are also in themidst <strong>of</strong> planning a service project inwhich every class member can participate… details to follow soon!We are looking forward to a greatrest <strong>of</strong> the year!


In swimming, the girls finished in 15th place out <strong>of</strong> 49 teams. Setting a new school record <strong>and</strong> finishing in 7th placewas the 200 freestyle relay team <strong>of</strong> Eleni Bautz, Claudia Capria, Mackenzie Hostage, <strong>and</strong> Carly Railing. The boysfinished in 23rd place out <strong>of</strong> 54 teams. Most <strong>of</strong> you are counting the girls <strong>and</strong> boys team,but who can name the third team? In only its second year, Algonquinis one <strong>of</strong> only twelve schools in the state with a Unified Track Team.Funded through a grant by the Special Olympics <strong>of</strong> Massachusetts(SOMA) in conjunction with the Algonquin Athletic Dept togetherwith local businesses <strong>and</strong> private donations, Unified Track <strong>and</strong> Fieldis a varsity sport which includes individuals <strong>of</strong> all developmental abilities.Every Algonquin student has a chance to represent his or school,enjoy the camaraderie <strong>of</strong> being on a team, <strong>and</strong> challenge themselvesindividually to grow as an athlete <strong>and</strong> as a person.However, this is the last year <strong>of</strong> grant funding from Special Olympicsfor the ARHS school team.Last year over 25 students from Algonquin (together with WestboroughHigh School) practiced <strong>and</strong> competed against eight otherschools. The season culminated on May 19 th with a Unified TrackThe Algonquin Regional High School ScienceDepartment is seeking speakers fortheir Science Career Day on June 10,<strong>2013</strong>. We are seeking pr<strong>of</strong>essionals whowork in various fields <strong>of</strong> science <strong>and</strong> engineeringto speak about their careers.Speeches should be about 10-15 minuteslong. It is a wonderful opportunity for studentsto hear about the wealth <strong>of</strong> sciencecareer opportunities available to them. State Championship Meet at Lunenburg High School. Algonquincame in second to a strong Nashoba Regional High SchoolTeam. Algonquin’s team hopes to build on its strength <strong>and</strong> experienceto field a competitive team that demonstrates that inclusion<strong>of</strong> individuals regardless <strong>of</strong> ability in all aspects <strong>of</strong>school life is the new normal.This year the team is looking to increase the number <strong>of</strong> participantswhile maintaining a 50/50 ratio <strong>of</strong> students with <strong>and</strong>without intellectual or developmental differences. All teammembers train side-by-side with each other practicing sprinting,jumping, <strong>and</strong> throwing events. Coached, by Kevin Hausmann,an Algonquin science teacher, the team is looking forvolunteer assistant coaches with or without prior coaching experienceto help the team build on its success.Student leaders include Lexie Koziel (ARHS, 2015) LindsayBertonazzi (ARHS, <strong>2013</strong>), Clara Anderson (ARHS, post graduate),Kevin Neil (WHS, <strong>2013</strong>) <strong>and</strong> Nishant Joshi (WHS, <strong>2013</strong>).Students will be organizing a fundraiser <strong>and</strong> be planning an “R-Word” Awareness Week” held in <strong>March</strong> together with theWHS <strong>and</strong> ARHS chapters <strong>of</strong> Best Buddies.Thank for your dedication <strong>and</strong> support <strong>of</strong> all Algonquin students <strong>and</strong> programs.Best BuddiesOn Friday night, <strong>March</strong> 1, Algonquin’s Best BuddiesChapter sponsored their Annual Best BuddiesFriendship Ball. Our Chapter President, Ellie McDonald<strong>and</strong> her <strong>of</strong>ficers spent months planning a funfilled night <strong>and</strong> making decorations. Best Buddiesfrom area schools had been invited to join us for anight <strong>of</strong> music by one <strong>of</strong> Algonquin’s own DJ’s fordancing. We also had an assortment <strong>of</strong> deliciousfoods including gluten-free items, many <strong>of</strong> whichwere donated by local businesses. Our attendees hadthe opportunity to have their pictures taken with theirfriends under the beautifully decorated archway. the beatFebruary <strong>2013</strong>Newsletter <strong>of</strong> the Northboro Southboro Music AssociationElizabeth Wig is a sophomore trumpet player, pianist <strong>and</strong> a newly inducted member <strong>of</strong> Tri-M. Sheis promoting music by mentoring an 8 th grade trumpet player from Melican Middle School afterschool.She currently plays in Symphonic B<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> although she has a quiet demeanor, herpresence in the trumpet section is that <strong>of</strong> a leader. Her positive attitude is respected among themusic faculty.Andrew Hamilton is a senior vocalist <strong>and</strong> instrumentalist. He sings bass <strong>and</strong> is a featured soloist inthe Chamber Singers <strong>and</strong> Concert Choir. He plays clarinet in the Wind Ensemble. In addition, he ispresident <strong>of</strong> Algonquin’s Tri-M chapter. Andy’s willingness to pitch in wherever needed helps tostrengthen our music curriculum. This past fall, when Andy discovered there was a need for asousaphone player in the <strong>March</strong>ing B<strong>and</strong> - he donned the uniform <strong>and</strong> answered the call <strong>of</strong> duty!>The Algonquin music faculty selects students based oncharacter, commitment, support <strong>of</strong> their fellow musicians<strong>and</strong> their contributions to the music community. A Message From the ADFran Whitten, III, Athletic DirectorWhat a fantastic winter season! This is such an exciting time <strong>of</strong> year with almost everyteam participating in post season play. The level <strong>of</strong> commitment both our athletes <strong>and</strong>coaching staff have demonstrated throughout the season has been exemplary. This inconjunction with our fan support is what T-Hawk Pride is all about.Boys’ Hockey finished second in theRoy Conference <strong>and</strong> is preparing fortournament action. The Wrestlingteam had an outst<strong>and</strong>ing season,placing 8 individuals in the Sectionals,5 State qualifiers, <strong>and</strong> 3 Stateplacers. Our Ski teams also had anoutst<strong>and</strong>ing season. The Swim teamalso had a great year going undefeated<strong>and</strong> winning the league championship.Several swimmers qualifiedfor sectionals <strong>and</strong> in the process broke numerousschool records. Boys’ <strong>and</strong> Girls’Track also set several school recordswhile placing individuals in the States <strong>and</strong> New Engl<strong>and</strong>s. Our competitionCheer team also qualified for sectionals this year. Girls’ Basketball won the leaguechampionship <strong>and</strong>qualified for tournamentfor thetwelfth year in arow continuingtheir rich history <strong>of</strong>success. Boys’Basketball alsowon the league <strong>and</strong>qualified for tournamentas well withthe number oneseed. Gymnasticswon the leaguechampionship <strong>and</strong>had two individuals named to the national team.With the winter season now coming to a close it is time to start thinkingabout the spring. Tryouts begin on Monday <strong>March</strong> 18 th . All c<strong>and</strong>idatesare required to have a current physical exam <strong>and</strong> permission form in orderto participate. Athletic fees can also be paid on line if that is a preferredoption. Based upon the success <strong>of</strong> our fall <strong>and</strong> winter teams this springpromises to be very exciting.
