256 FORT MASSACHUSETTS. [1748.tending powers in Europe had come to terms ofagreement, and in the next October the Peace ofAix-la-Chapelle was signed. Both nations were tiredof the weary and barren conflict, with its enormouscost and its vast entail of debt. It was agreed thatconquests should be mutually restored. The chiefconquest of England was Louisbourg, with the islandof Cape Breton, — won for her by the farmers andfishermen of New England. When the preliminariesof peace were under discussion, Louis XV. haddemanded the restitution of the lost fortress; andGeorge II. is said to have replied that it was not histo give, having been captured by the people ofBoston.^ But his sense of justice was forced to yieldto diplomatic necessity, for Louisbourg was the indispensableprice of peace. To the indignation of thenorthern provinces, it was restored to its former owners."The British ministers," says Smollett, "gaveup the important island of Cape Breton in exchangefor a petty factory in the East Indies " (Madras),and the King deigned to send two English noblemento the French court as security for the bargain.Peace returned to the tormented borders ; the settlementsadvanced again, and the colonists found a shortbreathing space against the great conclusive struggleof the Seven Years' War.1 N.
