^6 SEARCH FOR THE PACIFIC. [1727.1727 the scheme was revived, and the colonial ministerat Versailles ordered the governor of Canada tosend two missionaries to the Sioux. But the missionrequired money, and the King would not give it.Hence the usual expedient was adopted. A companywas formed, and invested with a monopoly ofthe Sioux fur-trade, on condition of building a fort,mission-house, and chapel, and keeping an armedforce to guard them.It was specially provided thatnone but pious and virtuous persons were to beallowed to join the Company, "in order," says thedocument, "to attract the benediction of God uponthem and their business."^ The prospects of theCompany were thought good, and the governor himselfwas one of the shareholders. While the missionwas given the most conspicuous place in the enterprise,its objects were rather secular than sj)iritual, —to attach the Sioux to the French interest by thedouble ties of religion and trade, and utilize theirsupposed knowledge to reach the Pacific.Father Guignas was made the head of the mission,and Boucher de la Perriere the military chief. Theparty left Montreal in June, and, journeying to theMississippi by way of Michilimackinac, Green Bay,Fox River, and the Wisconsin, went up the greatriver toLake Pepin, where the adventurous NicolasPerrot had built two trading-posts more than forty^ Traite de la Compagnie des Sioux, 6 Juin, 1727.2 On this scheme, Vaudreuil et B^gon au Ministre, 4 Octobre, 1723;Longueuil et Be'gon au Ministre, 31 Octobre, 1725 ; Beauharnois etDupuy au Ministre, 25 Septembre, 1727.
1728-1731.] THE SIOUX MISSION. 7years before.Even if his time-worn tenements werestill standing, La Perriere had no thought of occupyingthem. On the north, or rather west, side of thelake his men found a point of land that seemed fitfor their purpose, disembarked, cut down trees,andmade a square stockade enclosing the necessary buildings.It was near the end of October before theywere all well housed. A large band of Sioux presentlyappeared, and set up their teepees hard by.When the birthday of the governor came, the partycelebrated it with a display of fireworks and vociferousshouts of Vive le Boi, Vive Charles de Beauharnois,while the Indians yelped in fright and amazement atthe pyrotechnics, or stood pressing their hands upontheir mouths in silent amazement. The Frenchcalled their fort Fort Beauharnois, and invited theaid of Saint Michael the Archangel by naming themission in his honor. All went well till April, whenthe water rose with the spring floods and filledchapel, and houses to thefort,depth of nearly three feet,ejecting the whole party, and forcing them to encampon higher ground till the deluge subsided.^Worse enemies than the floods soon found themout. These were the irrepressible Outagamies, whorose against the intruding French and incited theSioux to join them. There was no profit for theCompany, and no safety for its agents. The stockholdersbecame discouraged, and would not supportthe enterprise. The fort was abandoned, till in 17311 Guignas a Beauharnois, 28 Mai, 1728.
