On the seventh of May asummons to surrender was sent to Duchambon, whoreplied that he would answer with his cannon. Twodays after, we find in the record of the council thefollowing startling entry: "Advised unanimouslythat the Town of Louisbourg be attacked by stormthis Night." Vaughan was a member of the board,and perhaps his impetuous rashness had turned theheads of his colleagues. To storm the fortress atthat time would have been a desperate attempt forthe best-trained and best-led troops. There was asyet no breach in the walls, nor the beginning of oneand the French were so confident in the strength oftheir fortifications that they boasted that women alone
