<strong>Powered</strong> <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Purifying</strong><strong>Respirator</strong> (<strong>PAPR</strong>)<strong>Instructions</strong>1. Unplug the <strong>PAPR</strong> from the cord connectingit to the battery charger andelectrical outlet.4. Remove the tissue paper covering theclear plastic face mask.To request a <strong>PAPR</strong> unit and hood:UIHC Personnel: call Hospital Stores at 356-1784IRL Personnel Call:Hood Sizes:Large: Order # 924256Regular: Order # 9243372. Inspect the airflow tube for cracks.Pay close attention to the end thatconnects to the head cover.5. Turn the <strong>PAPR</strong> on by Pressing theBlack Rubber Button.For Questions, contact:UIHC Safety Manager: 384-52083. Check to ensure that the airflow tubeis securely connected to the <strong>PAPR</strong>.Look for any signs of damage.6. To check the airflow, place the coneinto the upright end of the airflow tube.


7. The lower band of the cone will riseabove the edge of the airflow tube ifthe air supply is adequate.8. Connect the airflow tube to the plasticcircle at the back of the head cover.10. Guide the airflow tube upward behind youand put the head cover on. There are headbandsinside the head cover that fit snugly onyour head.11. Adjust the head cover so that the elasticizededge of the face seal fits under your chin. It isnow safe to enter the isolation room.Care and StorageCall for a replacement unit and/orhood if airflow is inadequate, the<strong>PAPR</strong> malfunctions, or there arecracks in the airflow tube or hood.Head covers can be re-used by thesame employee for the same patientas long as they are clean andintact.Store in a clean dry place, labeledwith user name; do not store in patientroom.Inspect before and after each useand replace when soiled or torn..Reconnect <strong>PAPR</strong> to the batterycharger when not in use.Disinfect hood with hospitalapproved germicidal wipes.9. Place the <strong>PAPR</strong> with airflow tube upagainst lower back & fasten belt.12. Remove <strong>PAPR</strong> in a non-contaminated area.Disconnect the head cover from the airflowtube with care by firmly grasping both piecesby the hard plastic parts and connect them.Gently but firmly pull the apart.RETURNING UNIT:Place machine, cone, hose, and beltin plastic bag and place in CentralSterilizing Service (CSS) pick uparea. DO NOT DISCARD CONE.
