MARAUDER MEN’S BASKETBALL 2007-08ChrisMalloyBradWiggsAssistantCoachChris Malloy is in his second season as a Marauderassistant coach. He joined the Marauderstaff, following Dieter Horton from Fullerton <strong>College</strong>,where he was an assistant coach for fi veyears.Last season Malloy helped Horton guide theHornets to a 37-0 record and a state championship.Before his time at Fullerton, Malloy had spentfi ve years as an assistant coach at Brea Linda.He was the freshman coach for La Serna for fi veyears before that.A graduate of Brea Linda, Malloy played twoyears of basketball for the Wildcats, and wasnamed Most Inspirational in his senior season.Malloy received his bachelor’s degree fromCal State Fullerton and a teaching credential fromCal Poly Pomona. He is currently working on hismaster’s in physical education at Azusa-Pacifi cUniversity.Malloy worked as an adaptive physical educationteacher for the Hacienda Heights-La PuenteSchool District for 10 years, and currently teachesadaptives for the <strong>Antelope</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> High SchoolDistrict.AssistantCoachBrad Wiggs returns for his eighth season withthe Marauder basketball program, his sixth as anassistant coach after spending two seasons asan assistant to the head coach.Wiggs left the Marauders after the 1997-98season after six years with the program, took ayear off, and then scouted for Cerro Coso from1999 until the Coyotes dropped their program justbefore the 2003-04 season. He then scouted the2003-04 season for Point Loma <strong>College</strong>.Wiggs currently teaches math and accountingat Boron High School.Before coaching for AVC beginning in the1991-92 season, Wiggs coached Boron for nineseasons, making playoffs in eight of those seasons.His 1990-91 team was 18-6 and averaged84 points a game.In 1984-85, his team won not only the DesertInyo Small League but the CIF Small SchoolsChampionship.Wiggs received his master’s degree in educationfrom Chapman <strong>College</strong>, his bachelor’sdegree in accounting from San Diego State, andan associate’s degree in business administrationfrom Bakersfi eld <strong>College</strong>.Wiggs resides in Lancaster with his wife,Heidi, and their son, Bradley (9), and daughter,Brooke (7).assIstant coaches7

NEWTON CHELETTE -- The Marauders’ Athletic DirectorThe winningest basketball coach in <strong>Antelope</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>College</strong> Marauder<strong>Basketball</strong> history, Newton Chelette has won and set records at everylevel he coached.In the summer of 2005, Chelette was named as the Dean of PhysicalEducation and Athletics. He had held the interim position for twoyears before that, and in those yearsChelette oversaw a complete revamp ofMarauder Gym, including new stands,court chairs and media tables. Healso has pushed forward the marketingeffort of Marauder Athletics, and hasstrengthened ties with many communityleaders and businesses -- efforts whichhave spilled over to help improve otherareas on the campus as well. He wasco-chairman of the committee for thepassage of Measure R, a bond issuethat will allow AVC to signifi cantlyimprove the campus.Fruits of his efforts are currently evident on the west side of the campusas the two year construction of the Marauders’ fi rst athletic complexbegins.Included in the construction are a 5000 seat stadium is scheduled tobegin construction on Nov. 15, that will include artifi cial turf, a new track,have equal seating on the home and visitor side and new press box.The entrance will shift from the southern to northern end of parking lot3, in a more central location near the baseball and softball fi elds as well.The area to the west of Marauder Stadium, currently open desert, will beconverted to soccer fi elds for AVC practice as well as community use.The baseball team will no longer be without a home stadium. Whenbuilt, the Marauders will have a baseball fi eld capable of seating 300fans, a press box and a new concessionsstand located at the northwest end ofMarauder Stadium.The softball fi eld will get a press boxand concessions stands. The project isexpected to be completed for the startof the 2008 Track and Field season andthe 2009 Football season and the newMarauder Stadium is scheduled to be thesite of the 2010 State Track and FieldChampionship.In the 2006-07 school year, MarauderAthletics fi nished in a tie for 29th in thePepsi/National Alliance of Two Year<strong>College</strong> Athletic Administrtors Cup, AVC'sbest fi nish ever. Marauder Athletics beatout all of their Foothill Conference opponents,and were second for programswith 15 or fewer sports.Before giving up the baseketball reignsin 2006, Chelette, led the Marauders tothe state championship fi nal four for thefi rst time since 1956 in 2004At AVC, Chelette brought ten conference titles in 17 seasons, and hasbeen named coach of the year seven years, including four straight. Hecoached seven straight conference players of the year, and his Marauderteams have competed in the playoffs 16 straight seasons andhosted playoff games in 13 of those 16 years. In 1995-96, 1996-97, and1998-99 Chelette’s teams were undefeated in conference play, the onlyMarauder teams to achieve perfection in conference.In the 2000-01 season, he became the winningest coach in Marauderbasketball history, recording his 272th win against Rio Hondo, and movingpast the man he replaced, Bob Murray.In 2008, he will be inducted into the California Community <strong>College</strong>Men’s <strong>Basketball</strong> Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame.In 1996-97, the Marauders set the school record for wins in a season,were ranked second in the state and won the third straight conferencetitle.In 1984, Chelette became the youngest Division I head basketballcoach in America and that season led Southeastern Louisiana Universityto its only Division I conference championship.In 2001, he was inducted into the High Desert Men’s <strong>Basketball</strong>Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame Coaches Division and he servedas President of the California Community <strong>College</strong> Mens <strong>Basketball</strong>Coaches Association in 2002 and 2003.With a .610 winning percentage overall as a head coach, Chelette hascoached on three of the four levels of competitive basketball coaching.Not only has he coached at the high school, community college andcollegiate level, his teams have won conference championships, and hehas won coach of the year honors at all three levels.Chelette recruited Joe Dumars (Detroit Pistons) to play at McNeeseState while he was an assistant coach there, and coached JR Rider(Minnesota Timberwolves) for a season at AVC.Chelette received his bachelor’s degree in business education fromMcNeese State University in 1973.While an undergraduate, Cheletteplayed four seasons as point guard forthe basketball team, and competed inthe college rodeo fi nals. In 1968, hewas sixth in the nation in the cuttinghorse and 11th in calf roping. He thenreceived his master’s of education inphysical education from McNeese in1978.Chelette graduated from Iowa HighSchool, where he lettered in football,basketball, baseball and track.He is a Div. I basketball refereeworking the Big West, Mountain Westand Western Athletic Conferences. Hehas worked several NIT and BracketBuster games as well as the Big WestConference Tournament.Born in Lake Charles, LA, Chelettehas three children, Amanda, Brady,who played for the Marauders in 1999-2001, and Kelly.
