The symposium brought together internationallyrecognized researchers, clinicians, educators <strong>and</strong> health experts whopresented the latest research on age-based nutrition for optimal health.Tree nuts were highly mentioned during the 2 days of meetings attendedby almost 2,000 doctors, dieticians <strong>and</strong> nutritionists, <strong>and</strong> 60 membersof the media. Food for Your Whole Life was sponsored by the CaliforniaWalnut Commission, in partnership with HealthCorps, American Institutefor Cancer Research <strong>and</strong> New York State Dietetic Association.Nucis Italia, a Proposal for the ItalianModern DistributionThe conference “Enhancing the value of <strong>Nut</strong>s<strong>and</strong> <strong>Dried</strong> <strong>Fruit</strong> at the points of sale in aninnovative way - a proposal for Italian ModernDistribution” took place during Marca <strong>2011</strong>, onJanuary 19, <strong>2011</strong>. Sponsored by Nucis Italia, theassociation of Italian companies in the dried fruitsector, set up to raise the awareness about thebeneficial effects of the consumption of nuts <strong>and</strong>dried fruit, the event offered to the operators ofthis sector the opportunity to discuss about thestate-of-the-art <strong>and</strong> the development potential ofthe category. Nucis presented the project “<strong>Nut</strong>s<strong>and</strong> <strong>Dried</strong> <strong>Fruit</strong> are Healthy”, whose first stagewas implemented in the 2007-<strong>2010</strong> period. Theobjective of the initiative was to disseminate apositive attitude towards these products bymeans of acknowledged scientific testimonies.The initiative involved more than 4,000physicians <strong>and</strong> health <strong>and</strong> nutrition experts in thedissemination of the message “<strong>Nut</strong>s <strong>and</strong> <strong>Dried</strong><strong>Fruit</strong> are Healthy”, coming in touch with morethan 1,5 million families in three years.Dietary Guidelines for AmericansOver the past two years, the <strong>Nut</strong>rition <strong>and</strong>Research Education Foundation (NREF) hassupplied over 170 studies to the US DietaryGuidelines Advisory Committee. Thesesubmissions have demonstrated that nutsare an integral component of a healthy diet.The US Department of Agriculture <strong>and</strong> the USDepartment of Health <strong>and</strong> Human Servicesannounced on the 31st of January <strong>2011</strong> theNew Dietary Guidelines to Help Americans MakeHealthier Food Choices <strong>and</strong> Confront ObesityEpidemic, which give consumers yet anotherreason to eat a h<strong>and</strong>ful of tree nuts (includingwalnuts, pistachios, pine nuts, pecans,macadamias, hazelnuts, cashews, Brazils <strong>and</strong>almonds) every day.<strong>Nut</strong> Consumption <strong>and</strong> Blood Lipid Levels, aPooled AnalysisDr. Joan Sabaté, at the Loma Linda UniversitySchool of Public Health in California, publishedan INC-NREF-funded pooled-analysis study onnuts <strong>and</strong> heart disease in Archives of InternalMedicine on May 10, <strong>2010</strong>. The results showedthat eating about 2.3 ounces of nuts a dayreduced total cholesterol levels by 5.1 percent<strong>and</strong> “bad” LDL cholesterol by 7.4 percent.
<strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> <strong>2010</strong>-1121Exhibits<strong>Nut</strong>s Highlighted in the IFT Meeting <strong>and</strong> Food ExpoThe INC exhibited at the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) <strong>Annual</strong>Meeting <strong>and</strong> Food Expo in McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois, USA,from 18 to 20 July <strong>2010</strong>, where thous<strong>and</strong>s of food scientists, suppliers,<strong>and</strong> marketers around the globe encountered innovations, from newhealth <strong>and</strong> safety benefits <strong>and</strong> product innovations to the latest consumerfavorites, fears, <strong>and</strong> trends.The participation of the INC at the IFT Meeting <strong>and</strong> Food Expo was agreat chance to provide valuable information about nuts <strong>and</strong> dried fruits,to meet with INC members <strong>and</strong> to exp<strong>and</strong> business contacts. Tree nuts<strong>and</strong> peanuts were also highlighted in several scientific sessions.SIAL Paris, the Largest Food Marketplace in the WorldThe INC participated in SIAL PARIS <strong>2010</strong> from 17th to 21st October<strong>2010</strong>, in Paris Nord Villepinte Exhibition. This fair was the largest food <strong>and</strong>beverage exhibition in Europe last year, very popular among importers<strong>and</strong> exporters of agro products around the world.The fair attracted visitors <strong>and</strong> exhibitors from across the globe <strong>and</strong> INC’sbooth received more than 150 visitors, among INC members <strong>and</strong> newcontacts, bringing us the opportunity to report about our activities <strong>and</strong>offer INC members a meeting point within the fair, while promoting theXXX World <strong>Nut</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Dried</strong> <strong>Fruit</strong> Congress.GulFood Dubai, Heading Far EastThe INC exhibited at GulFood Dubai, Middle East’s Number 1 trade eventfor the foodservice <strong>and</strong> hospitality industries, from the 27th of Februaryto the 2nd of March <strong>2011</strong>. It was the first time that INC participated in anexhibition in the Middle East.With more than 3,000 exhibitors <strong>and</strong> over 55,000 visitors from 150countries, Gulfood is one of the most important food, drink <strong>and</strong> hospitalitymarkets events, <strong>and</strong> provides industry suppliers with the region’s largestbusiness hub. This was an excellent opportunity to show companiesfrom the Middle East the wide-ranging services of our organization. Thenumber of visitors to the st<strong>and</strong> exceeded all expectations <strong>and</strong> manyinformative brochures were available at the booth, so being present gaveus the opportunity to meet potential new INC members <strong>and</strong> Congressparticipants.
