The project aims at developing strategicsolutions to reduce mycotoxin contamination that entails a higher concernin economically important food and feed chains. Novel methodologies, efficient handling procedures and information, dissemination andeducational strategies are considered in a context of multidisciplinaryintegration of know-how and technology to reduce mycotoxins exposureworldwide. The project is significantly built on the outcome of severalEuropean projects on mycotoxins by supporting, stimulating and facilitatingeducation and cooperation with countries having major mycotoxinconcerns related to (international) trade and human health. The INC, as participant of different working packages, develops thefollowing tasks:Training video for mycotoxin samplingThe INC is editing a sampling video for nuts, dried fruits and cereals, according to the European Comission regulation laying down the methodsof sampling and analysis for the official control of the mycotoxin levels infoodstuffs. The video shows the sampling procedure from the unloading ofthe cargo until the homogeneization of the sample for analysis.Economic evaluation of the impact of mycotoxin contaminationAn economic evaluation of the impact of mycotoxin contamination is beingcarried out. The INC is collecting information about industry losses andthe economic impact of rejections: the costs of demurrage, destructions, transports, inspection fees and routine tests, and even the costs for thegovernments.Dissemination of GAP, GMP and GSPThe INC website presents information about the Mycored project alongwith a database of international standards, Good Agricultural Practices,Good Manufacturing Practices, Good Storage Practices, HACCPprotocols, food safety alerts, and news about the project.A new report on the EU Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF)notifications for nuts and dried fuirts was published in 2010. The reportcontains all the notifications for nuts and dried fruits, classified by product, type of notification, country of origin, notifying country and reason fornotifying.Future workThe next step will be to enlarge the economic evaluation of the impactof mycotoxin contamination to cereals and grapes, and to assess theefficacy and safety of food and feed processing procedures for reducingmycotoxin content in nuts and cereal based products.

Annual Report 2010-1119Researchand PromotionDeclaration of Barcelona · The Benefits of Nuts on CardiovascularHealthAs a result of the INC Symposium “Nuts and Cardiovascular Health”held on March 4th, 2010, in Barcelona, Spain, within the frame of the2nd Congress of the Federation of Societies of Nutrition, Food andDietetics, the moderators and guest speakers of the session concluded adeclaration on the benefits of nut consumption on cardiovascular health. The benefits of nuts on cardiovascular health1. Nuts are a whole food that has been consumed by humansthroughout history.2. Nuts are energy-dense foods, rich in total fat and unsaturated fattyacids, fiber, minerals, and bioactive phytochemicals with antioxidantand antiinflammatory properties. In nuts, the whole is greater thanthe parts.3. Nuts are among the whole foods with a more impressive body ofscientific evidence supporting beneficial effects on cardiovascularand other health outcomes.4. Large prospective studies have consistently associated frequentnut consumption with a reduced incidence of fatal and non fatalcoronary heart disease.5. Incorporating all types of nuts into the diet has a consistent cholesterollowering effect that is dose related and more pronounced in personswith higher baseline cholesterol or lower body mass index.6. Nut consumption decreases triglyceride levels in persons withhipertriglyceridemia.7. Nuts reduce the postprandial glycaemic response whenconsumed with high-glycaemic index carbohydrate foods in bothnormoglycaemic subjects and type 2 diabetic patients.8. The reduction in coronary heart disease associated with nutconsumption depends on mechanisms other than cholesterollowering, as nuts have beneficial effects on insulin sensitivity, oxidativeand inflammatory processes, and vascular reactivity.9. Both epidemiological and clinical studies have shown that frequentnut intake is not associated with weight gain or worsening diabetescontrol.10. The daily inclusion of a handful of nuts in the usual diet can be ofbenefit for healthy individuals and those with hypercholesterolemiaand type 2 diabetes.Founding Signatories: Prof. Jordi Salas-Salvadó, University Rovira i Virgili,Spain; Dr. Emilio Ros, Barcelona Hospital Clinic, Spain; Prof. MiguelA.
