PERIPHERAL VISIONIDEAL for sports eyewear and sunglasses required with an addition. The same high definition Ultor optics of the progressive digital focusdesign can be calculated into a plus eight base wrap design. This can alsoincorporate (where given) changes in back vertex distance, wrap angle(sometimes called dihedral angle or face angle) and the tilt angle plane ofthe lens front from the natural vertical viewing distance and pupil size. When calculated all this data creates a compensated Rx at the centralaxis of view. The compensated Rx equation affects the point of gaze andreduces unwanted Rx, axis or prism. This combined with Digital Designprovides full width corrected vision right out to the edge of the lens.Available in many fixed tints, Transitions and Polarised options, SPORTORopens a new field of opportunities for lifestyle dispensing.Ordering SPORTOR compensated progressive lenses:Essential information:• Patient’s full prescription• Optical centres & heights, as required.Where uncut lenses are being ordered we will revert toaverage default figures unless stated:• Wrap angle (Dihedral)• Tilt angle (Pantoscopic)• BVD trial and actual distance• Pupil diameter (Optional)• Base curveAutoselect x 5“SP”Minimum 12mm’S’ SportorLarge far vision - limited readingCharacteristicsLarge and wide distance visionzone for optimised far vision.User Key PointsUses mainly the far vision zonewhile working, moves quicklyand often. COMBIPAL, PILOT & OCCUPATIONALProgressive lens designs are a brilliant concept for general wear. However,we know that progressive lenses have limited spherical fields of view forintermediate and reading, even more so as additions become higher. Thiscan be an issue for those working close and near distance for long periodsand who miss the wider reading areas that bifocals or trifocals provide.Ultor progressiveConventionalFT35 SegmentAll is not lost!COMBIPALThe Best of Both Worlds - COMBIPALComBiPal Flat TopUltor progressiveConventional Rd segmentComBiPal CrescentRd SegmentAdditionUltor progressivePilotImage progressiveWhere we take a bifocal semi-finished (seg on the front) and then createa low add progressive on its inner surface by which technique we have farwider fields of view than we would with a normal full addition PPL design.Where this particularly comes into its own is with higher additions. The fieldsof spherical view in +3.50 add progression, whatever design, are minimal.Putting a first time progressive wearer into a higher addition is unlikely tomeet with acclaim! But carrying the higher addition power split on the frontsegment and a lower progressive addition on the inner maintains reasonablefields of view even when +4.00 additions or higher – hence CombiPal,an inner progressive design of lower add power “carved” onto a higheraddition bifocal semi-finished blank.PILOTThe original Essilor design long discontinued, its revival now made possiblethrough free-form technology. In essence a bifocal segment placed high upin the spectacle frame for intermediate use to read dials and gauges. In anearlier age this may well have been called “librarian lens”.So, inverting a bifocal blank of the appropriate seg size (usually RD 40), weplace an Ultor progressive surface onto its lower concave curve. This wouldalso be achievable with a trifocal lens blank for someone who neededconsiderable variations in upper focusing distances!UP & DOWNSUltor progressiveUp & Down ProgressiveMention that we have already produced double progressive designs, thosewith both an up and down progressive surface. This is achieved by invertinga front surface progressive semi finished blank (Image) and, as explained forthe Pilot, forming a free-form progressive surface opposite its usual distanceposition, remembering of course to leave a sufficient window for a distancevision portion. Yes, and we could produce a Transitions VI or NuPolar varietyof the same!31

Enhanced Reading Lens- Two Focus LensesUsing an old fashioned one-focus reading lens has the inconvenience of notproviding intermediate vision, causing the wearer to constantly remove theirspectacles. A modern take on the old up-curve lens design, the two-focusVersatile degressive office lens is produced using progressive productiontechnology, so forming its invisible delimitation. Not to be confused withoccupational progressives (a 3 focus lens) featuring a range of plus additions.Versatile degressives have a lesser (minus) power portion in their upper part. For those spectacle wearers with failing accommodation for near distancesthen degressives are the answer. For close and near, not just only forcomputer users, but all those troubled by ageing vision; particularly usefulfor trades persons (painters) needing to achieve closer work distances.Thousands of potential users haven’t yet been introduced to this immenselyuseful lens form by their Optician. As an example, Transitions Versatiledegressives are just great for site surveyors and other outdoor workerssupervising public works and construction projects. This list can be endless, from deep mines to deep space, wherever ageing human eyes need torespond to close detail. The various Versatile designs are formed by digitaldesign and free-form lens production (excepting CR39).Versatile lenses improve the posture of bifocal or progressive lens wearersconstantly dealing with computer terminals, reducing neck or shoulder pain.Norville have designed a unique Versatile Demonstration and Fitting Set.Free-form Versatile lenses have the following identifying markings:V6 -125to identify horizontal line and top/bottom (degressive power to bottom).Material (*other than CR39) indicated by V6 = 1.60 index, V67 = 1.67 index, etc.Norville Versatile is available in four degressive (minus) powers -0.75, -1.25,-1.75 and -2.25Norville can produce Versatile in any index, material or tint. This lens product is hugely beneficial to both practice and patient. Versatile isavailable in most lens materials but where not as standard can be individuallyspecified as bespoke dispensing. NORTOR - SV Digital DesignNORTORSingle Vision StoryA very long time ago the Chinese, Greeks, Romans, and later theVenetians, produced spherical lenses in transparent materials. Over thecenturies these simple magnifying lenses slowly improved in diameterand quality but were still basic spherical surface designs.Spherical Lens ToolIt took until 1824 before Sir George Airy invented and produced thecylindrical lens. Then onwards until the 1960s various distinguishedmathematicians and optical designers tinkered with lens forms todiscover the best optical performance attainable from what was still basicspherical or toric curves.Whilst they may have understood what was needed by the way ofaspheric curves to correct varied aberrations, mass manufacturingtechniques to achieve these had not yet been perfected… until today.Free-form CuttingIn the 80s and 90s, computer-controlled machining, firstly designed forengineering, was modified with single point diamond turning to producesophisticated optical surfaces. Once measuring and comparing actualvalues against design values was perfected, digital surfacing became a21st century reality.Norville, using such technologyof advanced “best optics” digitaldesign to achieve high definitionacross all of the lens area, wereable to turn theory into realitythrough free-form production. Finally “topping out” ourNortor Digital SV lenses with highperformance hydrophobic and oleophobicanti-static reflection-free coating.Nortor Production LineGreat Rx Range - Widest Choice41

Position of wear values (POW) can be individually input or ifno information is available Nortor design will default to standard parameters.Base CurveSpecific base (front) curves can be specified to meet the needs of the lensmatching the curvature of the frame design, e.g. sunglass wraps. The frontbase curves of today’s stock lenses are generally much flatter than previously.Specifying a particular base is fine as the NORTOR design software correctsits optics accordingly.Wrap AngleWhere the wrap angle (frame face form) exceeds 10° dispensers may wishto specify the angle value. Many wrap sunspec frames record a figure of20° or 25°. This will result in a “compensated” prescription calculation, i.e.different spherical and cylindrical curve to the original.Pantoscopic TiltThe angle between the optical axis of the lens (TILT) and the horizontalaxis of the eye. For 100% patient satisfaction, fit to horizontal and verticaloptical centres, i.e. measure as if progressives.Lens MarkingNortor premium single vision lenses are engraved for Nortoridentification. The material index is marked under the temporalmarking.HD and Total PersonalisationOur latest order book format enables total optimisation of Rx design. Maximum optical performance for any frame.Norville’s descriptor of Nortor HD SV but modified to a +8.00 base lens blankor other wraparound base curve.Conventional lenses mounted on high curved frames have a mediocreoptical performance. In some cases, the pupil position can show more than0.20 dioptres of error. The same high definition Nortor optics of the single vision digital ray pathdesign can be calculated into a plus eight base wrap design. This canalso incorporate (if available) changes in back vertex distance, wrap angle(sometimes called dihedral angle or face angle) and the tilt angle plane ofthe lens front from the natural vertical. This creates a compensated Rx at thecentral axis of view. This all affects the point of gaze and reduces unwanted Rx, axis or prism intothe equation. Recreational & Cosmetic Reduced Edge ProgrammeRECReduced Edge BlendNew free-form lens processing technology enables us to reduce the edgesubstance of lenses by creating a blended edge effect. In minus Rxs thisphysically removes the outer edge curve then blend polishing back to approx50mm of its original central “bowl”.With plus lenses, creating a steeper minus curve at their edges means thatthe edge becomes thicker, enabling a further reduction of centre substanceto achieve the same edge substance as originally specified for glazing, againbased around a 50mm clear central zone.CR39+8.00 base, -4.00 DSREC wrap CR39+8.00 base, -4.00 DS• Sportor optics design but with Reduced Edge Blend• Unique technology reduces both plus and minus lens thickness.• Edge reduction achieved with PERIPHERAL EDGE BLENDThis process can be applied toULTOR SPORTOR NORTOR-SV51

Blended Bifocal RD28 IRSIronically, in the style of those old glass solid bifocals (segments on theconcave inside surface), free-form manufacturing allows us to produce aRD28 blended edge segment bifocal design. But there the similarity to oldstyle bifocals ceases! Because, similar to inner surface progressive designs, here the segment also incorporates any cylindrical element! Who wouldhave ever thought a cylindrical power round segment addition would bepossible? The downside is a ring of blend surrounds each segment.Remember, because blended designs are free-form they will have the addedadvantage of atoral curve correction for HD vision right across the full lensbeyond the segment limits both for the distance and around the segmentarea.Norville’s Blended bifocals, coded IRS (invisible round segments), can beordered in most resin lens materials. We have selected a number of materialsnormally unavailable in the bifocal lens form (listing - see following page). However, we can produce other combinations, which you may wish tospecify under the bespoke free-form option.Bespoke rangeAll materials (excepting Trivex 1.53 and Polycarbonate) can be ordered as anIRS bifocal option.Larger diameters than those listed “as standard” can be achieved byphysically decentring the seg position laterally at the time of production. We have already successfully supplied a number of +4.00 additions in thisproduct.Other segment sizes can be “bespoke” ordered.Right EyeLens Marking ChartLeft Eye75707570300300As viewed from front.52

Bespoke Atoral - adding the HD factorULTOR &NORTOR XXLDigital Free-formThe Norville Group is pleased toannounce the largest progressiveever! With larger frames for sunglassesand again everyday wear, Norville’sfree-form design team have comeup with a solution for the patientwho wants their prescription to thatlarge sunspec no matter what.Effectively, we can produce XXLlenses up to a 100mm lens whichshould have a major change inwhat spectacle mounts you cannow say yes to.Not just single vision!Norville offer the XXL, which canbe requested in either Ultor innersurface progressive or Nortor atoricsingle vision.Ultor XXL and let us do the rest. Please remember that although wedecentre your patient’s centres inthe correct place we cannot takeresponsibility for the additional edgesubstance that can be a by-productof XXL frame choice, i.e. the largerthe lens blank effective diameter thegreater the lens thickness. We can usually increase the lenseffective diameter by a maximumof 20mm, so a 60mm diameter canonly become 80mm or 80mm to100mm!However, one word of warning - theED of the lens shape needs to bejust less than the available blanksize, i.e. we are unable to stretch a65mm to fit a 68mm ED howeverhard we try!If you consider the regular lens sizetoo small just state Nortor XXL orAll of course ideal for sunlenses.Bifocal,Trifocal,Front SurfaceProgressivesThere may be many occasions whenyou desire to “supercharge” yourclient’s vision yet the lenses you wishto use are not shown on the regularlist as digital design options. Noproblem - you can specify a Bespokefree-form solution. Norville will thenapply an enhanced high definitionvision solution to your preferred lenschoice (any choice!) using exactlythe same high quality HD digitalcalculations. It’s simple – rather than useconventional inside surface lensfinishing with its traditional standardspherical or toric curve, we willupgrade the design using an Atoraldigital design curve designed, calculated and produced with freeformlens surfacing technology forpoint focal accuracy right across thelens surface. This HD technology can be appliedto any existing lens type or material,so upgrading the quality of itsoptics. Just add the words “HDdigital free-form” – HD to the lensform e.g., S728 Trifocal HD freeformand we will do the rest. This is especially advantageous onlarge lenses, spherical powers over3D, cylinders over 1D and lenseswith prisms.Adding the HD sparkle54

Current Technology - Challenges & FAQsNew technology brings with it newissues whose solutions have to be relearnt.Digital design and free-formproduction are immensely complex.Evolving technology is the aptdescription.Lens EngravingToo bold, too faint: why can’t you get itright – we wish we always could. There isnothing more frustrating than throwingan otherwise perfect lens away becausethe engravings have vanished! All theseare contributory factors: hardness ofsubstrate, polish and polishing times, hardcoat viscosity, laser power, lens curve(marked on minus), oven times, tint bathtemperature, density of tint and even afew more! Work in progress!Compensated RxPage 4 outlines the HD added datathat changes an Rx as written into acompensated Rx. It is quite astoundinghow much this alters on a serious wrapRx. We have to find a better way ofindicating to you these changes, youneed to know as it is the amended orcompensated Rx you need to have tohand for final verification and clientrecord purposes (the axis as well as thepowers change). We have seen a neatway of acknowledging this with selfadhesive strips printed with the newRx. We do have this information in ourcomputer system but in its current printform it doesn’t get to you! Next yearour altered docket/invoice system willresolve this. However what to do in theinterim! As a start we will stamp yourorder “Compensated Rx used”Another work in progress item.Power rangesThe negative curve range that can beproduced from free-form productionmachinery has a limitation currently ofminus twelve dioptres which results in atotal minus power on CR39 lens forms of-10.00D -11.00D depending on the basecurve, however producing that samecurve on 1.67 or 1.74 index materialincreases this to -15.00D. With time wehope to be able to extendon this. The positive power range islimited to the maximum semi-finishedplus power available often +12.00DS, theindex and the substance giving ussome extra plus power. So we cansometimes deliver a +16.00DS, howeverone technical word of warning forprogressive lenses, you need to adddistance and reading as a total power tofit within the published plus parameters.PrismWhilst we haven’t as yet collected clinicalfeedback, the theory calculations wouldindicate that a prism lens manufacturedwithin a free-form lens exhibits higheroptical performance than regular(traditional) production methods. We canincorporate up to 6 of worked prismcorrection into a CR39 lens and, as theindex of the lens material increases, thenup to 8 is achievable.Anisometropic correctionWith the advent of free-form productionthe old term slab-off or newer term slabon(base up) becomes less obvious. Forfree-form lenses prism blend may be thebetter description, for within the designof the progressive addition area, includingits cylinder, we can further add prism. Weare experimenting with splitting it acrosstwo lenses (halving the physical blend)rather than leaving it all in one lens astraditionally. If we can make the lens wecan add prism up to a max of 4 (physicallimitation). This is a work in progress thatdispensers can assist us with by providingfeedback.Nortor HD Fitting informationAll free-form digital designs are asphericpoint focus so it is important the centreof the design is matched to Px’s pupil –viewing position. Most prescribers aregood at doing this for distance monoPDs but please re-engage with readingPDs as well as distance. For HD singlevision vertical centration should also berecorded. Take the time to set frame upbefore noting fitting measurements. Trulythe best vision you’ve ever dispensed!Quality ControlFree-form technology brings fantastic new opportunities to Rx lens manufacturing with itshigh flexibility approach - but it also creates an absolute need for a perfect process control. The new OMM 60 is the ideal control and surface inspection system for all kinds of complexsurfaces. The analysis software is able to compare the processed lens with the theoretical designmap. The measuring method is done via a high precision measuring pin and measuring accuracy is +/-1um. The measured results can be displayed in different ways.Convex and concave lenses can be measured and the system is able to measure both ground andpolished surfaces.Typical surface error contour map3D Surface Model55Actual Cylinder Map
