English TranslationsSubmit official translations of all educational documentsoriginally issued in a language other than English.“Official translations” must be issued by a translationagency or university language department. Thetranslation must be typed on official stationery,with the name, phone number, and address of thetranslator. The translator must attest proficiencyin the original language and must indicate that thetranslations are true and correct. Photo/notarizedcopies will not be accepted, nor will an evaluation ofyour education take place unless academic recordsare accompanied by true and complete, word-forwordtranslations.4. Proof of English Language CompetencyAll students educated outside of the U.S. must submitproof of English proficiency. A minimum TOEFL(Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 80(Internet-based test; no section lower than 17), 213(computer-based test) or 550 (paper-based test) isrequired for all applicants, although some graduateprograms may require higher minimum scores. ContactTOEFL directly (www.toefl.org) to request an officialscore report; DePaul’s TOEFL code is 1165. DePaulalso accepts an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher in placeof the TOEFL.Please note that TOEFL cannot be waived forany applicant educated in a country where the nativelanguage is not officially recognized as English.Waivers will not be granted to international applicants/non-native speakers on the basis of the following:education at a non-U.S. school where English wasthe “language of instruction,” U.S. employment orU.S. residency alone, completion of an ESL programalone. TOEFL may be waived (upon receipt of anofficial transcript) if an international applicant hascompleted the equivalent of DePaul’s English 103and 104 with a grade of C or better at an accreditedinstitution in the U.S. TOEFL may also be waived forfreshman applicants who receive a 500 or higher onthe verbal section of the SAT, or 18 on the readingand 20 on the English sections of the ACT.5. Conditional AdmissionStudents applying for certain programs who receivea TOEFL score below the minimum requirementand who meet all other requirements for admissionto an academic program may be granted conditionaladmission. Students will be required to enroll inDePaul’s English Language Academy (ELA) for atleast one term and receive a minimum score of 550on the ELA-administered paper-based TOEFL beforeregistering for academic classes.6. Examination Scores and AuditionsSeveral programs require standardized examinationsresults and no admission decision will be made untilofficial score reports are received. Programs requiringspecific exams or auditions include:• All Kellstadt Graduate School of Business programsrequire GMAT (Graduate Management AdmissionTest) results.• Law Degree (JD) programs require LSAT (LawSchool Admission Test) results.• Master’s degree programs in biology, nursing,philosophy and psychology require GRE (GraduateRecord Examination) results. GRE results also arestrongly recommended for the graduate physicsprogram.• Ph.D. programs in psychology require GRE(Graduate Record Examination) results.• All music and theatre school programs requirean audition, interview or a portfolio from eachapplicant.7. References and Statement of PurposeGraduate programs may require reference letters,essays, research articles, publications or other creativework. Contact the appropriate graduate program fordetails. All undergraduate and graduate studentsshould submit a statement of purpose.A copy of DePaul University’s Annual SecurityReport is available upon request. The report includesstatistics about crimes that occurred on campus andpublic property immediately adjacent to campus.The report also includes institutional policiesconcerning campus security, sexual assault andother matters. A copy of the report can be obtained atdepaul.edu/securityreport.Immigration and Financial MattersFinancial DocumentationStudents who plan to apply for F-1 or J-1 student visastatus are required by U.S. immigration law to submitevidence of adequate funding to meet the estimatedtuition and living expenses for their first year of studybefore the I-20 or DS-2019 form can be issued. Pleasecomplete and submit the enclosed financial affidavit ofsupport form along with a current (dated) and originalbank statement verifying the availability of funds forthe required amount. Documents must be writtenin English or accompanied by an official translation.Promissory notes or employers statement of estimatedearnings will not be accepted. Any false statementsmade regarding financial responsibility violate U.S.immigration laws. DePaul is not responsible if theamount of funds shown as available by the student orsponsor on the affidavit of support becomes unavailableafter the date on this affidavit.Passport CopyAll students requiring an I-20 or DS-2019 from DePaulmust submit a copy of the identification page of theirpassport with their financial documents.Transferring your I-20 FormIf you currently have F-1 visa status and attendanother school, college, university or English languageprogram in the U.S. and are admitted to DePaul, youmust receive a new DePaul I-20 form.
