OVERVIEWCurtin University, through the Curtin <strong>Health</strong> Innovation Research Institute (CHIRI)interprofessional practice program (IPP), has been developing and expanding practice basedinterprofessional education experiences for our students for more than three years. Theseplacements provide students with authentic learning experiences where they learn with,from and about each other whilst developing the interprofessional collaborative practicecapabilities required to deliver safe, high-quality client-centred care.The program has received both a Faculty (2010) and a University (2011) “Excellence inTeaching” award. It has grown from strength to strength and now has an internationalreputation for innovative design in fieldwork, classroom and e-learning settings.The CHIRI IPE placements are offered across a diverse range of community environmentsfrom primary schools to aged care, and students from four of the five WA universities areparticipating in placements coordinated by the Curtin CHIRI IPP team.This brochure is designed to give the reader an insight into the kind of placements onoffer, the activities the students will engage in and the potential benefits to the clients andsites involved.The information about placements is current at the time of printing.We hope you find the booklet useful. The aims of the program are:• Allied health students work, learnand practise together demonstratinginterprofessional practice skills.• School children, identified as beingpotentially ‘at educational risk’, willbeing included in individual and groupprograms in order to enhance the child’scapacity to undertake their occupationalrole of being a student, self-maintainerand friend.• Teachers and other school staff willcollaborate with the allied healthstudents learning concepts and skillsthat will be sustainable after thestudents leave the school.

The DSMMR is centred onstudent led reviews of the managementof medications and their effects onresidents’ cognition, falls/balance andcontinence.This placement will provide a settingfor students from the disciplines ofPharmacy, Occupational Therapy,Speech Pathology, Psychology,Dietetics, Nursing and Physiotherapy tocollaborate and understand the roles ofother healthcare professionals involvedin the management of residents in anaged care setting.A typical day at this placementwill consist of a team meeting andinformation gathering, a teamdiscussion and team presentations.<strong>Student</strong>s are expected to have a degreeof independence, engage in some selfdirected learning, as well as educatetheir peers and Rowethorpe staffabout their profession and how theyas a clinician will contribute to theinterprofessional team to the benefit ofthe resident.There will be an opportunity to developprojects, run therapy sessions andcreate educational tools that canbe used in the care and support ofRowethorpe residents.
