Opportunitiesfor advancement in the electronics field are above average.Biomedical Electronics OptionThe Biomedical Electronics Option is a specialized program focusing onmedical equipment. Career opportunities exist in hospital and clinical settings,engineering departments, and medical equipment manufacturingcompanies, as well as other organizations serving the rapidly expandingmedical equipment service market. This course of study will also help preparethe electronics student for the Biomedical Equipment Technician CertificationExam of the International Certification Commission for ClinicalEngineering and Biomedical Technology.Additional Graduation RequirementsTo receive either an associate degree or a certificate of completion, students arerequired to obtain a Career Readiness Certificate in the areas of Applied Math,Reading for Information, and Locating Information at the appropriate level fortheir respective degree option. To facilitate success in obtaining their CareerReadiness Certificate, students will be required to take 1 credit of OETS 102,Career Readiness Certification Preparation. A program advisor can provide additionalinformation.Associate Degree (69–70 credits)NOTES: Courses with course prefixes appearing in italics are identical tothose offered at <strong>New</strong> <strong>Mexico</strong> <strong>State</strong> University Las Cruces (main) Campus.The explosion in the number and diversity of electronic devices used inhome and industry settings has greatly intensified the demand for qualifiedtechnicians. As orders for high-tech communications equipment and electronicproducts continue to rise, job opportunities for electronics technicianswill expand even more. Salaries in the various branches of electronicsare among the highest for all technology areas.Students in the Electronics Technology program learn using state-of-the-artequipment and instrumentation. They work and train in spacious, modernlaboratories similar to those used in industry. Students have the opportunityto analyze and troubleshoot actual problems while learning from knowledgeableand experienced instructors.The Electronics Technology program may be completed on a part-time basisby taking classes during the evening or during the day. Those who wishto pursue a bachelor of science degree in Engineering Technology at <strong>New</strong><strong>Mexico</strong> <strong>State</strong> University may apply up to 36 credit hours from the ElectronicsTechnology program toward the four-year degree.While pursuing this program, whether they are taking classes or working asapprentices, students will be required to perform the same job duties andbe able to meet the same physical requirements that they will as a graduatein the field. Depending where they find employment, graduates may be requiredto lift up to 50 pounds from the ground, work safely around electricalequipment using the appropriate safety equipment, work safely using handand power tools, ascend and descend stairs and ladders, and stand, squat,stoop or kneel for long periods of time.Two program options are available:General Electronics OptionThe General Electronics Option prepares graduates for entry-level employmentas technical assistants and technicians in the fabrication, testing, maintenance,and repair of electrical and electronic equipment.
