2012-2013 <strong>Catalog</strong> 37Building ConstructionTechnologyCertificate of Completion (COSTS LISTED ON PAGE 12)(575) 527-7595The certificate in Building Construction Technology is a one-year programthat prepares students for entry-level positions within the growing constructionindustry. Affording much hands-on participation, the curriculum includessafety, basic math skills, blueprint reading, use of hand and powertools, basic surveying, wood building materials, concrete work, masonryskills, painting, and communication skills. This competency- and performance-basedprogram follows nationally recognized NCCER certificationstandards.Students may enroll on a full-time or part-time basis. Many courses are offeredin the evening to accommodate students’ work schedules. Studentsare required to purchase steel-toed boots, at a cost of approximately $75.00,and a set of hand tools, at a cost of approximately $75.00, by the secondweek of the first Building Construction Technology program course they enrollin.All Building Construction Technology students are encouraged to joinSkillsUSA. Membership provides students an opportunity to develop theirleadership skills and to become proficient in public speaking and parliamentaryprocedure. SkillsUSA also offers students a chance to demonstratetheir occupational skills. Skill competitions are conducted each year in <strong>New</strong><strong>Mexico</strong> for all postsecondary students.Whether taking classes or working on a job site, students enrolled in thisprogram will be required to perform the same job duties and be able tomeet the same physical requirements that they will as a graduate in thefield. Depending where they find employment, graduates may be requiredto work in inclement weather, lift up to 50 pounds from the ground, havegood eye-hand coordination, work safely around electrical hazards usingthe appropriate safety equipment, work safely using hand and power tools,ascend and descend stairs and ladders, and stand, squat, or kneel for longperiods of time.Additional Graduation RequirementsTo receive either an associate degree or a certificate of completion, studentsare required to obtain a Career Readiness Certificate in the areas of AppliedMath, Reading for Information, and Locating Information at the appropriatelevel for their respective degree option. To facilitate success in obtaining theirCareer Readiness Certificate students will be required to take 1 credit of OETS102, Career Readiness Certification Preparation. The needfor supervisors and managers in business organizations continues to growwith the economy, and our students are filling those positions. The experienceand education you receive through the Business Management programprepare you to assume the responsibility of supervising and managing businessoperations.The Business Management program, through a curriculum of practical trainingcourses, general education courses, and selected elective classes that target aspecific industry or business, can help prepare you for an entry-level supervisoryor management position. You may take courses as diverse as Introductionto Supervision, Business Law, Economics, Computer Spreadsheet Applications,and Business Finance.The program also includes fifteen credit hours of electives, allowing you tocustomize your course of study and concentrate in a particular instructionalarea. You may choose courses from four areas of emphasis: General Management,Real Estate, Retail Marketing and Merchandising, and Financeand Banking.
