36 Doña <strong>Ana</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>Automotive TechnologyAssociate of Applied Science DegreeCertificate of Completion (COSTS LISTED ON PAGE 12)(575) 527-7754 or 527-7594The automobile has always created a steady demand for automotive technicians.Today, automotive service is one of the fastest-growing industries in thenation, and career opportunities are expanding rapidly.The Automotive Technology program at Doña <strong>Ana</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> iscertificated by NATEF/ASE (National Automotive Technicians EducationFoundation/Automotive Service Excellence) and is designed to preparethe student for an entry-level position as a line technician, shop foreman,service writer, service manager, or business owner. Completing courses,certificates, and/or degrees from an NATEF certified school will enhancestudents’ ability to gain employment as well as better prepare them tobecome NATEF certified.Students are trained using state-of-the-art equipment. In the laboratories,they practice the same service and repair techniques required of any professionalservice technician working in the real world. Each class includesa number of carefully selected competencies that must be mastered inorder to successfully complete the program. Students are trained in —• Engine service• Manual drive train and axles• Brakes• Heating and air conditioning• Automatic transmission/transaxle• Suspension and steering• Electrical systems• Fuel and emissions• Engine performanceThe Automotive Technology program also offers two commercial drivingclasses (CDL), AUTO 130 and 131, that prepare students for the CDL exam.Classes are offered in the daytime and also at night to accommodate workschedules.Full-time Automotive Technology students must purchase a personal set ofautomotive technician’s tools, at an approximate cost of $850, and shouldprovide their own safety glasses, medical/accident insurance. The tool setincludes the basic tools that most employers require for an entry-level position.Part-time students will purchase only those tools required by the specificcourse(s) in which they are enrolled.All Automotive Technology students are encouraged to join SkillsUSA,which membership provides students an opportunity to develop their leadershipskills and to become proficient in public speaking and parliamentaryprocedure. SkillsUSA also offers students an opportunity to demonstratetheir occupational skills through competitions that are held annually onboth the state and national level.Whether taking classes or working on a job site, students enrolled in thisprogram will be required to perform the same job duties and be able tomeet the same physical requirements that they will as a graduate in the field.Graduates may be required to lift and carry 50 pounds safely, work safelyusing hand and power tools and electrical equipment, and stand, squat,stoop, or kneel for long periods of time.Additional Graduation RequirementsTo receive either an associate degree or a certificate of completion, studentsare required to obtain a Career Readiness Certificate in the areas of AppliedMath, Reading for Information, and Locating Information at the appropriatelevel for their respective degree option. To facilitate success in obtainingtheir Career Readiness Certificate students will be required to take 1 creditof OETS 102, Career Readiness Certification Preparation.
