GAUHATI UNIVERSITYANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2011-12FOREWORDThe <strong>Gauhati</strong> <strong>University</strong> was established as a teaching, residential andaffiliating <strong>University</strong> in the year 1948 under the <strong>Gauhati</strong> <strong>University</strong> Act 1947(Assam Act XVI of 1947) passed by the Assam Legislative Assembly on 15thOctober, 1947. The then Prime Minister of Assam, Lokapriya GopinathBordoloi formally inaugurated the <strong>University</strong> on 26th January, 1948. To-day itis the oldest and the largest <strong>University</strong> of the North-eastern Region of thecountry.The <strong>University</strong> is spread over an area of about 250 acres which hasalready developed into a small township named “Gopinath Bardoloi Nagar”.The <strong>University</strong> is almost self-sufficient in terms of civic amenities like healthservice, water supply, electricity, Guest House, Post & Telegraph Office,Bank, Markets, Parks, Playground, Auditorium, Schools. ATM etc. togetherwith residential quarters for teachers, officers, employees and as many as 20hostels for students. One SC Hostel and two Girls’ hostels are underconstruction. A huge Academic Building is coming up by the side the G.U.market, which is ready for occupation. The construction of the K.K.HandiquiLibrary Annex building is also completed. Another building for IST,extension of one RCC Boys Hall (RCC-2) and another RCC- Girls Hall (RCC-5), Arts Building one building for Education Deptt are under construction.The National Highway which is dividing the <strong>University</strong> is diverted along thenorthern side of the campus, which is likely to be operational by 2013. Anextension to <strong>University</strong> Guest House is under construction.The <strong>University</strong> has 49 P.G. Departments besides a constituent<strong>University</strong> Law College, an Institute of Distance and Open Learning with alarge number of centres all over the Sate, an Institute of Science andTechnology offering B.S., B.Tech. and M.Tech. Courses, an Institute of NorthEast Studies (GUINES), an Academic Staff College finance by U.G.C. and aPre-Examination Training Centre (PETC). The Central Library of the<strong>University</strong> named Krishna Kanta Handiqui Library has a huge number ofcollections of books, journals and other reference documents. It also has aunique collection of books owned by our first Vice-Chancellor Late Dr.Krishna Kanta Handiqui which were donated to this <strong>University</strong>. An AnnexeBuilding to the existing one is under constructions and with the completionof this, it is expected to solve any space problem for the existing library.There are nine Faculty, which include faculty of Arts, Science, Commerce,Law, Medicine, Engineering, Technology, Management and Fine Arts. The<strong>University</strong> has about 326 affiliated/permitted College offering Undergraduate,Post-Graduate and/or Post Graduate Diploma Course in the Facultyas mentioned above. College Development Council, led by a Director looksafter the development of these colleges. Researches in various field inalmost all the <strong>University</strong> Academic Departments are going on and produces alarge number of Ph.D. Scholar every year. The <strong>University</strong> being a State<strong>University</strong> gets annual financial grants from the Govt. of Assam in the form ofGrant-in-aid and development grants from the <strong>University</strong> GrantsCommission. Besides the above, a number of organizations, like CSIR, DST,


2DBT, NEC, ICAR, ICHR and similar other funding agencies sponsor variousresearch projects. Some of the P.G. Departments of <strong>University</strong> have beenrecognized by UGC for their excellence in academic and research and theyhave been granted financial assistance under Special Assistance Programme(SAP) of <strong>University</strong> Grants Commission.The <strong>University</strong> conducts about 400 numbers of examinations. To meetthe requirement of additional space, the top floor of the Administrative,V.C.’s office and Arts Building are being extended with Assam Typeconstruction.After being accredited in 2001 with a 4 star rank by NAAC, the<strong>University</strong> was re-accredited in March,2010 with a point grade of 2.91 in the3.00 scale. As per guideline of the NAAC, the <strong>University</strong> has already set upan “Internal Quality Assurance Cell” to prepare for self study report not onlyfor the <strong>University</strong> but also to guide the Affiliated Colleges in their ownpreparations. A number of Affiliated Colleges have prepared themselves forre-accreditation and some of them have already been visited by the NAACteam recently for re-accreditation.In this Annual Report attempts have been made to record informationconcisely regarding Academic and Administrative Departments of this<strong>University</strong> and its Affiliated/Permitted Colleges. Our sincere thanks go to theHeads of the Departments of the <strong>University</strong>, Principals of theAffiliated/Permitted Colleges and the <strong>University</strong> Officers, Dy. <strong>Registrar</strong> andother employees for their kind co-operation in bringing out this AnnualReport.Date : 02-01-2013U.C.
