I bet you dotoo. And you’ve probably neverthought about it that much. It’sa delightful time that we takefor granted. Thanks to ReishaFreedman, our fabulouskiddush organizer, we havedelicious kiddush receptionseach Shabbat and holiday atOhev Shalom. And thanks toorganizers Reisha, Karen Stesis,Judy Stall and other volunteers,as well as celebrating sponsors,on special occasions thesekiddushes expand beyondtreats to full-fledged lunchesand occasional onegs on Fridaynight.Sugary succulent treatssatiate our palates after 2 ½hours of prayer, Torah reading, and discussion. Looking moredeeply, however, the brownies, fruit tarts, and birthday cakes ofkiddush are just the tonguewhich draws us into theextraordinarily warm mouth ofour community, which is mostopen, intimate, and friendly atthis special moment of theweek. It’s a cozy environmentwhere, increasingly anddelightfully, our congregantsare tarrying longer and longeras the months move on –catching up with friends, andgetting to know others. Andleaving our defenses, workagendas and personal lists foranother time. When else doesthat happen regularly in yourlives, if at all?The post-service kiddushreception is a classic Jewishevent – created for practicalreasons x and y, touching deepseatedpsychological and bigpicture needs, while capturingadditional meaning over thegenerations.According to stricthalakha, Jewish law, we don’thave breakfast before morningprayers. Hence, our postminyanbreakfasts. And, onShabbat, the kiddush reception, giving a needed nosh at a latestage of Shabbat morning. Yetit is also an important mitzvahto sanctify Shabbat with theblessings over wine or grapejuice, and with the eating ofChallah. Hence Kiddush Rabba(“the Great kiddush”) which wesay before we devour ourbrownies. The words of theV’shamru and other optionalparagraphs remind us ofShabbat’s distinctiveness fromthe other six days of the week –and our need to separate, asGod did, from the ways of therest of our week. Through thewords of the Kiddush, wesanctify our social time.Consequently, it isprohibited to talk about ortransact business matters duringthe kiddush reception or duringthe rest of Shabbat, for thatmatter. And only emergentcommunal matters may bediscussed. As if we really wantto talk about our business livesduring kiddush anyway! Wewant, and need a break. Weneed to relate to people – andto ourselves – in a different way.And we deserve to immerseourselves in the oneg – thedelight – which the Book ofIsaiah exhorts us to create onShabbat.

Volume 3, No. 6 Page 3For many of us, kiddushafter Shabbat services bringsthe effective end of Shabbat. It’s a last taste of Shabbat restand peace before the list ofweekend errands take over. Sowe tarry, we talk, we sit, wehear about other people’s lives, their kids, their dreams, theirvacations, their thoughts on theTorah portion, whatever. PleaseGod that we tarry ever longer, that we feel no rush to return toour lists and agendas, and that, with God’s help, we keep ontarrying even when we gethome, returning to themundane only with the end ofShabbat at Havdala. This year, 5768, CongregationOhev Shalom welcomes RahelMusleah to our community asScholar-Artist-in-Residence. Page 10The Honey JarJewish and Christian Interpretation of the Bible—Gratz CollegeI recently completed a course atGratz College entitled “Jewishand Christian Interpretation ofthe Bible.” I enrolled in thiscourse because I wanted tolearn more about the religion ofour Christian brothers andsisters. While I will never knowenough about my Jewishreligion, I knew very little aboutChristianity.Though I participateregularly in Jewish ritual, it didnot necessarily follow that I hadenough general knowledge ofour Jewish religion outside ofthat ritual. So, it seemedimportant to me to learn moreabout my own Jewish history, about Christianity’s history, andthe reasons why and when ourreligions parted. The course was taught bytwo teachers: a Rabbi/PhD anda Christian with a master’sdegree in divinity. This dualarrangement was important tome. I wanted to learn theChristian portion of the coursefrom a teacher who is Christian, who has a Christian point ofview and who has earned aformal knowledge ofChristianity. Our class was a mix ofadult Christian and Jewishstudents. Each of us broughtour experience and ourknowledge to the text, fourhundredpages of essays andwhat became apparent, awillingness to listen with openminds and respect to the other.I probably have alwaysthought of Jesus as beingChristian. After all, Jesus hasbeen preached about, writtenabout, is the visible symbol of,and has been the central part ofChristian theology for twothousand years. In Christianity,Jesus lives on as a living figure. In Judaism, Jesus remains anhistorical figure. Jesus was bornJewish and he died Jewish, asdid many other Jews andgentiles who were persecutedand crucified by the Romans. Now, I think of Jesus as Jewish, and when I think of Christianity,I think of it as a religion withJewish roots.Christianity is one of ourworld’s greatest religions.Judaism is one of the world’soldest and greatest religions. There are good-heartedChristians and good-heartedJews who find positive andcommon bonds in eachreligion’s messages of goodness, compassion and kindness, inoutreach to those in need, in thestudy, practice and love of ourrespective traditions and ritual, and in each religion’s uniqueways of finding meaning whenwe come to God.I am Jewish because I wasborn Jewish. But what if I hadn’tbeen born Jewish? What if I hadnot been born into eitherreligion and my ultimate goal intaking the Bible class was tochoose between becoming amember of one of these twogreat religions? What if I had tochoose today between beingChristian and being Jewish? But, because I am Jewish, amore relevant question mightbe, beyond being Jewishbecause by birth, what does itmean to be Jewish? Can I findthe answer to my question bytaking my inherited religion forgranted: To passively be Jewish, not to actively “do” Jewish.Judaism says that if I neverattend a Jewish service, lightShabbos candles or perform aJewish act, I will still die as a Jewand be entitled to be buried in aJewish cemetery. To anyonewho might visit that cemetery,my headstone would beindistinguishable from theheadstone next to mine, wherea person who spent their lifeperforming mitzvot is buried. Will the figurative length ofour Jewish life be equal to thetwo dates on our headstone:the date of our birth and thedate of our death? Or, is aJewish life one that is filled withthe struggle to find Jewishmeaning?Coming back to Judaismafter years of being a nonobservantJew can be likedressing in a conservative styleof clothes after a lifetime ofdressing casual. One learns thatConservative Judaism is a stylethat continues to wear well astimes change, yet provides justenough room to feel there is thespace to change.I admire so very much ourJewish converts and what theyhave added to our synagogueand my life. If the date of aconvert’s conversion can becalled the date of their Jewishbirth, then their long, demanding road of learningpreceded their birth. For thoseborn Jewish, learning hopefullyfollows birth. For those bornJewish, birth should not besomething to be taken forgranted, but a head start.Andrew J. Szabo

Volume 3, No. 6Page 13Tikkun Olam: Repairing the World a Little Bitat a TimeEvery year at this time, I’mscurrying and worryingabout Martin Luther KingDay, when some 60-80 or somoms and kids fromCommunity Action Agencyof Delaware County’s(CAADC) shelters spend theday at Ohev Shalom with ajaunt to the HealthPlex afterlunch to blow off steam. Willthere be enough for lunch? Will the kids eat the lunch? Will the crafts work out? It’slike a kids’ birthday party, butmuch bigger.I always splurge atBorders. The kids love Dr.Seuss, and they’re almostnever donated (because I’msure families are saving themfor grandchildren — as theyshould!). I buy GoodnightMoon and the board books Iloved to read when my kidswere little, and the CrosbyBonsall books that go overwell when squirmy childrenwon’t listen to much else(worked on my kids, too). Ibuy African-American chicklitfor the moms. (I lovechick-lit. They do, too.)The Rabbis said: If allthe sufferings and pain in theworld were gathered on oneside of a scale, and povertyon the other side, povertywould outweigh them all.I can only imagine whatit’s like to have $21 per weekper person to buy food(that’s what the U.S.Government allows for foodstamps), and to always worryabout how to stretch thatinto a week’s meals. I canonly imagine what it’s like toworry where to get themoney to buy another box ofdiapers. So many people aretrying to make do onminimum wage jobs —working a day job and anight job, too, to try to getby. The cleaning crew at myoffice all have day jobs inaddition to four hours ofcleaning bathrooms andemptying waste baskets. They leave home at 6 a.m.and return after 10 p.m.I pray the day maycome when every kid hasarmloads of Dr. Seuss andBerenstain Bears and dotingparents to read them with. When every school is wellrun and filled with healthykids and smart, energeticteachers. When every parentcan go to a nearby grocerystore and buy food withoutworrying (too much) aboutthe cost, and meet a fewfriends, and have a shortchat. And when everyonecan walk on the sidewalksand drive in the streetswithout worrying aboutviolence.Speedily and soon.Speedily and soon.Fran Stier,Social Action ChairOhev Shalom:A Chesed (Kindness)CommunityThe Chesed Committee and theOhev Shalom community owethank yous to the followingactive members of thecommittee:Mark PaikoffKaren ErnestAndy Szabo and Sue LongKaren StesisAndrea DuchovnayRomie GreismerDoris EloferJane CohenAmy PollackElsa WachsBonnie KaplanDecember 25 VolunteersOur thanks to the followingcongregants who volunteeredfor service on Dec. 25, 2007:TAYLOR HOSPITALTed and Harriet OzerNatalie and Stanley SchneiderAl Chazin & Linda Chazin (niece)CROZER CHESTER MEDICAL CENTERSteve Levinstein (for over 20years & Crozer really appreciatesit!)Bernie MissanJoel FirestoneAndrea DuchovnayJoann Landau & son DanielCOATESVILLE V.A.Al and Bernice HitnerBernice FishmanBonnie BreitDecember 25 VolunteerCoordinator
