18LOCK FunctionThe lock function prevents accidental changes to the frequencysetting and the keypad controls.To activate the lock feature,press the keyfollowed by thekey.In the LOCK mode, the“ ” icon will appear onthe display.To turn the lock featureoff, press press thekey followed by thekey again; the “ ” iconwill disappear from the display.You can still access the 121.500 MHz Emergency Frequencywhen the LOCK function is on. Simply pressthe key momentarily (this key never locks). Pressingthis key also unlocks the radio.BASIC OPERATIONBeep On/OffThe <strong>VXA</strong>-<strong>710</strong>’s key/button beeper provides convenientaudible feedback whenever a button is pressed. Each keyand button has a different beep pitch, and each functionhas a unique beep combination.When you are scanning, the beeper will be heard each timethe scanner halts on a busy channel. This may be distractingin some environments; if you want to turn the beeperoff (or back on again): Press and hold the keyfor 2 seconds. This instantlyrecalls Menu Item“Beeper.” Press the key to enable adjustment of this MenuItem. Rotate the DIAL selector knob to select the desiredselection.On: Sounds a keypad beeper corresponding to amusical note.DTMF: Sounds a keypad beeper corresponding to aDTMF tone.Off: Keypad beeper is “off.” When you have made your selection, press thekey to save the new setting, then press the PTT keyrepetitively until the radio exits to normal operation.<strong>VXA</strong>-<strong>710</strong> SPIRIT OPERATING MANUAL
