2013-2014 Biennial Budget <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tukwila</strong>, Washingtonbeen effective in o<strong>the</strong>r communities. The community will see an increased police presencethroughout all <strong>of</strong> our neighborhoods with an emphasis on <strong>Tukwila</strong> International Boulevard• Investments in our Urban Renewal Area on <strong>the</strong> Boulevard – To assist in <strong>the</strong> transformation <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Boulevard into a safer neighborhood and a vibrant business district, <strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong> will invest upto $400,000 each year in expanding its holdings in this area. These one-time investments willprovide for long-term savings in specifically targeting <strong>the</strong> high crime areas.• Proactive Code Enforcement – The <strong>City</strong> is reaffirming its commitment to proactive codeenforcement through an investment <strong>of</strong> approximately $50,000 each year, which will cover <strong>the</strong>cost <strong>of</strong> additional staff resources, more coordination across departments and fullimplementation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rental Housing and Nuisance Property Ordinances.• <strong>Tukwila</strong> International Boulevard – The <strong>City</strong> will invest $70,000 to hire a full-time staff member,supported through new revenues from our recently signed contract with Waste Management,to focus on garbage collection and keeping <strong>the</strong> <strong>Tukwila</strong> International Boulevard presentable.This will include installation <strong>of</strong> more than twenty new trash receptacles, new glass in <strong>the</strong> busshelters, and replacing light fixtures.<strong>Tukwila</strong> International Boulevard and <strong>the</strong> surrounding neighborhoods are a key focus for <strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong> andthis continues through <strong>the</strong>se new budget Initiatives.Invest in our Neighborhoods – Safe sidewalk programThe budget includes a $6 million investment in creating safe sidewalks in our neighborhoods: $1.68million in three residential communities during <strong>the</strong> 2013-2014 biennium, $2.9 million in 2015 andapproximately $500,000 per year, beginning in 2016, as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> six-year plan.Invest in Strategic PlanningThe budget includes an additional $100,000 each year to continue <strong>the</strong> strategic planning process,which is a key to our future success in aligning our priorities with resources. The Community visionand goals describe <strong>the</strong> desired future <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tukwila</strong>: The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> Opportunity – The Community <strong>of</strong>Choice. Meeting this Vision and <strong>the</strong>se Goals will require <strong>the</strong> contributions <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> city’s partners,including residents, businesses, and local and regional community-based organizations.Specifically, <strong>the</strong> Plan identifies <strong>the</strong> following five goals:• Goal One: A Community <strong>of</strong> Inviting Neighborhoods and Vibrant Business Districts• Goal Two: A Solid Foundation for All <strong>Tukwila</strong> Residents• Goal Three: A Diverse and Regionally Competitive Economy• Goal four: A High-Performing and Effective Organization• Goal Five: A Positive Community Identity & Image.The 2013-2014 budget provides funding for <strong>the</strong> next phase <strong>of</strong> implementation which will be critical toensuring that <strong>the</strong> gains made through <strong>the</strong> initial planning process are carried forward through <strong>the</strong>next biennium.Page 9
